The Angry Cager…

Had to run down to Phoenix airport today to make the last FedEx drop off. I took the BMW K12LT as I had barely enough time and didn’t want to deal with traffic. Made it just in time and was headed back home. On the north bound hwy 51/101 exchange, traffic comes to a near stand still as the two lane overpass merges to one lane before dropping down and merging with the connecting freeway. We were all moving at about 4 mph and everyone was moving into position for the one lane merge. I placed myself in line just like everyone else so that every other car merged together. However, seems the 30 something lady next to me decided

The weStrom and the Lady

As a few know, my wife has decided to take up riding her own motorcycle. We decided on a DL650 Vstrom, or better known to the DL crowd as the weStrom.

I wanted to get the wife a DL650 used, but since they came out in 2004, finding one for more than a few dollars less than new was impossible. So I decided, we got good insurance and hell we can fix any scratches she puts into it, let’s just get a new one.

Julie (The wife) and I talked about her enjoyment of the DL1000 and the fact that the price was about $2200 more for the DL1000. Since Julie is cheap, and I doubted that she would

Golf and Motorcycle Racing

There’s an article here at superbikeplanet.com that’s pretty damn funny. It’s a few years old but timeless nonetheless. While I don’t consider myself a golfer, I do enjoy getting out with the fellas on a company scramble, etc. where you can rely on someone else’s talent. But the reality is I suck at golf, but enjoy it when I make the time…if I’m drinking.

I have two main problems with golf - the price to play a decent course and the time to finish 18 holes. My options are usually to spend the $100 on grip-heaters, a Euro-stand, or crash bobbins. Those are tangible goods that will be there

Off-Roading the Caponord

I finally got to meet Doug, a fellow blogger at 40 on 2 this past Friday. Since both of work for companies that had Good Friday off, it was a Great Friday. :) On a somewhat last minute decision, we met up in Maricopa, AZ to head out for the morning.

I was really looking forward to this ride for several reasons. First, it has been a while with having a 2 year old daughter and a 3 month old daughter. Second, its been even a longer while where I wasn’t watching the clock. Was I going to get home when I said I was so that my wife can get some errands

Aprilia on the Rebound?

It looks like things are improving for the Aprilia brand for a number of reasons. Since Dec 30, 2004, the Piaggio Group has taken full control of the company as another piece of the pie joining Moto Guzzi and Laverda among others. According to an article in RoadRacing World, there is opportunity by sharing the dealer network to combine and possibly expand sales with the Moto Guzzi & Aprilia brands. As a proud owner of two Aprilia’s, it is pleasing to see that the dealer network may expand…the main weakness of the brand IMO. Lack of a dealer support structure and the inability to get OE parts has plagued the brand in the

“Too Bad”

That was the State Trooper Robert Peasley’s response to a 911 call regarding a man injured in a motorcycle accident. They called again and got”Yeah,” the officer responded. “Help will get there. Shouldn’t be playing games.” This accident happened in August 2004, and the cop was suspended on March of this year for 15 days without pay as the AP story reported. Fifteen days suspension for gross misconduct in an emergency situation some eight months later??? Yeah, that’s just.

Look, it appears that in all likelihood, the rider would have died anyway. That should not matter. It also appears from the story that EMS response was not impacted. I doubt

Brakes 101 - Master Cylinders

Master cylinders often create varying answers on bulletin boards when the question “Should I get a radial pump master cylinder for my bike?”. The problem with those varying answers is that only a small handful of responses are correct. Those along the lines of changing lever feel, volume, and force requirements are on the right track. However, that’s about it. With modern motorcycles, an aftermarket will not greatly help fade, stiffness, or effectiveness of the brake system. The purpose of this article is to unpack all that I know about master cylinders (as a brake system engineer) in plain English and apply it to the motorcycle arena. I’ll cover the following topics:

  • Purpose
  • Master Cylinder Sizing…Ok
  • Suspension 101 - Part 3: Initial Setup

If you talk to people about suspension and what they want out of it and you’ll get a multitude of answers. Most will be happy simply to make their bikes comfortable and predictable. Modern suspensions with adjustable preload and damping will provide this. As a rider’s skill improves, and he pushes his bike and tires harder, all suspension variables become more sensitive and crucial to get right. At this point the rider is beyond ride quality. What’s needed is balanced grip in the front and rear. At this level of riding questions of bike attitude and damping come to the forefront where as previously (quality first) they had very little influence to the rider. If there is one thing I’ve

    Fieldsheer Highland 1pc Suit

ATTTENTION: If you are part of AeroStich Army that believes anything less than a full “Stich” is like riding naked, please read another blog. This review will just upset you!!!

So I am back into motorcycling with a vengeance, add to that some money burning a hole in my wallet. Unfortunately, the SWMBO really cannot support me buying a lovely $858 (After alternations and shipping) for the AeroStich roadcrafter suit.

So anyway, I am a cheep guy and I personally don’t buy my shirts tailor-made, and I find JC Penny shirts to fit me just fine. With this in mind, I searched out a reasonable solution and went upon a quest to get something to

The wife and the track day…

I am going to get the wife to start posting on her experiences of moving from the back seat into her own motorcycle.

Over the past few months, my wife of almost 10 years has taken the MSF class. She enjoyed the women’s only class and passed almost at the top of her class (100% on the written test). She has been riding my well worn out BMW R80RT and we have kept the rides short as I am not 100% sure the BMW will take a long drive anymore.

This past weekend (March 20th) we attended the AzTrackDay.com sportbike fest at Firebird’s West raceway.

At $15 we were to be entertained with track day riding (and crashing), a “Stunt Show”
