Kellen Winslow Jr.

I am sure by now every football fan and Ohio resident knows the accident that occured on May 1st of this year. Kellen Winslow II apparently endo’d after hitting a curb at an estimated 35mph and experienced human flight. I have followed his story as his father was a boyhood sports legend to me. God knows why I took a liking to the Chargers as a Detroit resident at the tine, but nonetheless I still have fond memories of that heroic performance against Miami in 1981 playoffs…but I digress.

Kellen Jr. went out and bought a new GSXR750 one month prior and that violated his contract. Apparently, athletes have a clause in their contract that prohibit them from participating in dangerous activities…hmmm. Anyway, sports like hang-gliding, sky diving, and riding are included on the list. It is still unclear what the Cleveland Browns organization will do. The signing bonus could be retracted due to contract violations.

Here’s the Cliff’s Notes version of the story from AP:

CLEVELAND — Kellen Winslow remained hospitalized more than a week after sustaining internal injuries and damage to his right knee in a motorcycle accident.

“He’s still in the hospital [NOTE: released on May 10th] and we don’t know when he will be getting out,” Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel said Monday. “We’re hoping that he can recover soon.”

The Browns have not provided an update on Winslow’s status since releasing a statement Wednesday that said they were concerned about his knee.

Winslow was injured May 1 when he went flying over the handlebars of his newly purchased motorcycle at 35 mph.

Westlake police are still determining whether to charge Winslow with reckless operation, Lt. Ray Arcuri said. Arcuri said it’s unclear exactly what Winslow was doing when the accident occurred.

The 21-year-old tight end, Cleveland’s top pick in the 2004 draft, bought a powerful motorcycle last month and had a learner’s permit, but ignored advice from fellow riders to get lessons.

Here is the actual video of Kellen Winslow’s Crash. You can see the concern on his agents faces (Kevin and Carl Poston).

The reality is that this was a bonehead move. If someone was willing to pay me that kind of salary, I would abide by the contract. I would give up my love of two wheels for the interim. I would scrub toilets with my hair if that’s what it took. On top of the contract violation, it looks like he was riding like an ass. It turns out that Winslow rode to Canton and spent more than one hour at a motorcycle shop Sunday. An off-duty police officer working security at the store says Winslow left on the bike doing a wheelie…way to blend.Unstrapped helmet, wheelies out of the parking lot, and riding like an idiot in the real footage caught just moments before the incident occured (heh - gotcha. see link at bottom between 33 & 53 seconds on the mpeg).

I don’t wish even those I don’t like to crash having done so twice myself. But Darwin allows us a sneak peek of the ‘likely to crash’ riders and once again he did not disappoint. I still have not seen a final damage report on his injuries, which to me is likely bad news for his career. If he misses games as a result of his motorcycle accident, his contract states that he could forfeit his entire option bonus of $4.4 million as well as $5 million of his signing bonus.

What will be remembered as this incident fades will not be how dumb Winslow was, but how dangerous motorcycles are just as spoons are responsible for making Rosie O’Donnell fat.

Alright - The real video footage just before he crashed from a security camera is here
