The Motorcycle Gear Shopping Process

As was previously mentioned, I am in the hunt for a pair of boots. After a semi-thourough search, I think I know what I want given what I want to spend. Its a little amusing to shop around for these kinds of things. I’ll explain.

The first step was to check the forum’s that I participate to see what those ‘trusted’ opinions think. I say trusted source because after you sort through the morons, good advice is usually given. In addition, forum members arent afraid to say the bad either.

The next step was to confirm the forum thoughts on the internet to see if any of those met my needs. I also expanded my search

Gearing Up For Commuting…

As the hot weather has officially cracked here in AZ, I am gearing up for my first attempt at being a true commuter. I’ve been adding to the ‘motorcycle stuff’ closet for the last couple of months and am almost done. I should be good for all conditions except lightning. My aluminum foil beanie does not go on rides with me.

Right now is beautiful weather at about 70-80F. Life is good and should stay good for another month or two. The weather during the day does not change too much. but the morning ride in ambient drops significantly as winter passes.

I just snagged a 2-pc German police suit off of ebay recently for $115 and

Have You Punched an Environmentalist Today???

Seriously…have you? There is not much to add beyond the fact that the greenies have gone too far. Its no surprise that a decision to ban sanctioned fun in the federal forests came out of Kalifornia. Please take note (in bold below) of those groups and see my solution at the bottom for how to respond to their direct mailings should they come to your address.

I am curious to know if the official legal decision was based on sound judgment or the typical activist judgment that too often comes out of the Kalifornia courts. If you’re an attorney or know one who can decode the text into real English, it would be greatly appreciated,

Star Warrior - Midnight

Its been a while since my wife and I talked about motorcycles…at least since she cried when I sold my Valkyrie. I replaced that bike with an Aprilia Caponord which she absolutely hates the looks. The Capo is a great bike for all around riding including the commute. Its quiet, efficient, comfortable, and can go off-road with much less guilt than a normal street bike.

I was having a conversation with gothicbeaST a while back and was inquiring if he knew of a cruiser that met the following conditions:

  • Must clean up reasonably quick since I want to commute on it - my Valkyrie was a bitch to clean with all that chrome.
  • Must have at least a 220 mile
Harley Davidson vs. Buell

My neighbor across the street was welding some gussets on to my Caponord centerstand tonight as they tend to bend with us little guys that have poor form putting that beast upright. We got to talking abot bike (go figure) and Harley Davidsons came up. He stated that he loves the way they look and has wanted one for many years, but his wife won’t let him take the leap.

We got to talking about the local dealers, and hich were HD and which were custom shops, etc. It sparked my memory of the last visit I had to Arrowhead Harley Davidson . Granted, I am not in the market for a new bike, but I

YZ426f & Riding the Goat Trails…

I had put in a ‘reservation’ with my wife about a month ago to go for an all day ride scheduled for yesterday (Saturday). Unfortunately, we have some urgent needs to tend to at work which will likely require after hours during the week. Being the good spouse that I am, I go in early so that I can leave on time to help with the little ones for the dinner and bath routine. Since its likely that I will not be around this coming week for the evening hand-off, I figured I would cut my wife some slack and stay around this weekend as much as possible.

I did say as much as possible, but not in

Scott Russell Gets the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Nod

I couldn’t be happier. Yeah, I know he was kind of a pain in the ass to deal with, but he was one of my favorites to watch in my mountain twisties formative years of the early to mid 90’s. That and the fact that the northern Georgia back roads were his old stopming/training grounds.

I remember we used to have an annual Daytona 200 party, and wow was he fun to watch. I specifically remember that one year, he crashed (a simple low-side) and came back to win it on a Kawi. Then he won it on a Yamaha, which IMO was a great feat since their 750 was only competitive in the 600 class for power.

I remember him riding

Hybrid Motorcycle - Yamaha Gen-Ryu

Knowing a little about hybrids, this is intriguing to me. A hybrid that performs like a one-liter bike, yet has a 600cc R6 based engine. This actually makes sense since in the automotive world, the hybrid counterparts to the petro vehicles make more peak horsepower (e.g. Lexus RX330 HEV makes about 80 more Hp than the base engine model).

My concern would be in the overall handling due to the added mass of the electric motor and batteries. Yamaha seemed to address this by making the bike scooter-like versus anything sporty. I am curious as to why they did not project a fuel economy figure.

Anyway, here’s the scoop:

This model is a proposal for a

I’ve got questions…

Recently, in another forum, I was taken to task for comments about a motorcycle fatality that, I felt, was the result of plain, old-fashioned stupidity on the part of the motorcyclist. The basics of the story: Damien Smith, 26, died from head injuries sustained when when he flew over the handlebars of his Harley Davidson while attempting to stand on the seat. He was not wearing a helmet and the stunt was performed on a public street. He left a wife and three children. The full story is here.

“He had a little bit of a wild streak in him - that’s what done him in,” said Tim “Uncle Joe” Smith, Damien’s uncle. “He’d wanted that motorcycle for 10 years.

MotoGP - Phillip Island

Another excellent race for the win until the end when Rossi walked away. That said, the drag race between Melandri and Checa was pretty cool too. An even closer one was between Nakano (Kawi) and Tamada (Honda) with a 0.04second differential tipping in Nakano’s favor. I didn’t even see that one as the cameras were on Rossi.

Well, I think the jury is out. Something hapened at Laguna Seca that lit a fire under Mr. Hayden. Sure he’s not winning, but his finishes have been consistently higher than before Laguna. Heck, he even led for a moment. While its true that it appeared that Rossi had full control of the pace
