Harley Davidson vs. Buell

My neighbor across the street was welding some gussets on to my Caponord centerstand tonight as they tend to bend with us little guys that have poor form putting that beast upright. We got to talking abot bike (go figure) and Harley Davidsons came up. He stated that he loves the way they look and has wanted one for many years, but his wife won’t let him take the leap.

We got to talking about the local dealers, and hich were HD and which were custom shops, etc. It sparked my memory of the last visit I had to Arrowhead Harley Davidson . Granted, I am not in the market for a new bike, but I am seriously interested in the Ulysses. That thing just seems cool.

Anyway, I walk into the dealership and see a guy with a sales nametag on and walk over to him. No I don’t look like a ‘biker’ either. I said to the guy “can you tell me about the Ulysses?”. He looked at me like I had two heads, rolled his eyes, and said “I don’t sell those pieces of shit.”

Now he was not knocking the quality of the bretheren Buell, he was a Harley guy and Buell was a sellout. Nice. That jerk should find a new career. What is it with these guys that its Harley or nothing. I wonder what they think of the popularity of all the customs taking from their sales? I know, I’m a poser.

Much like Aprilia, Buell is hardly a household name. At least the Aprilia guys in the showroom are cool to you.

:=) Well, you have to admire such a straight talking guy !
He genuinely loves what he sells.

You’ve heard of racism, can you say “brandism”.

It’s always amazes me how narrow-minded, short-sighted and ignorant people in our “community” can be. This guy had a chance to sell you a bike on his floor and he didn’t even make an attempt (including finding another salesman who cared or knew something about Buells). If I was this guys boss, he’d be looking for a new job right now.

Sunds about right for the basic HD salesman I’ve encountered.

I think unless a person walks right up to one of the conceited bastards and says “Hey, Dickhead. Sell me a bike or I’ll cut your bag.” they feel obligated to the assume the same sort of asshole attitude their customers don when the HOG patch comes in the mail …

Or maybe I’m just a dick. Maybe both.

I just bought a XB12Ss from our local Harley dealer. My experience was different. They didn’t seem to be pushing them, but they were glad to talk to me, let me have a test ride, and seemed to know & understand the bikes.

I think there is a weeding out process going on now. A lot of dealers are dropping the Buells. These are the sort of dealers you visited. check out

for more info. There is a lot of discussion on this topic there.

Similar experience. I went into the Salt Lake Harley/Buell dealer and noticed no Buells on the floor. A salesperson was not around, but the girl at the desk said they had no Buells at this store, they were all in the Sandy, UT store. Why not have at least ONE Buell to look at?

After now having worked for ( but never again ) in 3 of the Harley dealerships in the Phoenix area, I know the bad feelings and vibes that the Buell customer gets when they walk in and ask for help.
Yes, some of these salesman are “HARLEY ALL THE WAY”, but the real blame for such poor Buell sales and knowledge is the dealer. They provide ABSOLUTELY NO TRAINING OR ENCOURAGEMENT in how to show and sell a Buell. The Buell is made fun of by the owners of these places and the bad habits do trickle down.
But then again, when you get right down to it, most of the salesman in the valley are not that sharp about Harley’s either.
The very low level of service and follow up here is horrible. Dealers do NOT want experienced, mature, courteous sales people. They want 25 year old boys who are happy to make their rent and beer money. It is really very sad.

Its all circle of life stuff….

Bought a new Superglide in the early 70’s . Simple clean lines. Baggers were mostly rode by cops, shriners and wannabe’s and looked down on my bike (not a bagger).
Got shit from all the jap bike owners but non bagger Hog riders were tight back then.

Now every one has a Harley.

Buell is like that now. Many HD riders don’t like them. They don’t fit with most Jap bikers.

Sport bikers that ride them are rare.

These bikes are a pure engineering form with mass management carried to an extreme. The new machine with 145 HP should finally provide a competitive platform from which to launch a true competitor.

Hell, we should all buy one just to see the evolution of bikes in a new direction.

Just don’t expect others to aappreciate…they are invested in something else.

Boy can I relate. I bought a bike from them anyway. (Arrowhead Harley Davidson)What a mistake. Brand new took it in 9 times for an oil leak they apparantly couldn’t fix.Only had 2,000 miles. The last time they said don’t come back till 5,000 miles.Leaking like a sive. I got so frustrated I traded it in. They can’t even change the oil without scratching something or screwing it up. They scratched the chrome head covers and said sorry too bad! When I bought pipes that they installed 4 hours later fell off nearly hitting a friend while riding behind me. I did get them to replace those.Unfortunately the ones they replaced them with I noticed after I got home the chrome was all pitted. I took it back to get them replaced again and they said again: Too Bad not gonna do it. Do me and yourselves a favor, don’t buy anything from them jerk offs they can’t even do an oil change right. On the other hand the I found the absolute best dealer in the country! Hacienda Harley in Scottsdale,Az. For sales talk to Judi Almeida she is great. The service dept.is great too never had a problem and bike was done right the first time.
