Over-40 Riders

Maybe I’m getting touchy about my age; I’ll be 41 in January. For whatever reason this headline caught my eye:

Flood of over-40 bikers prompts renewed focus on safety rules

Hmmm.

… people 40 and older have become the largest single group of motorcycle owners in America, and they’re also riding bikes with larger engines.

OK.

But as they hit the road in record numbers, riders 40 and older also have been getting killed more often than their younger counterparts. That’s spurred state governments to re-examine their motorcycle regulations.

Uh-oh.

Now, on-going rider training is an excellent idea and I encourage all riders to take the Basic Rider Course before buying a motorcycle and the Experienced Rider Course every two to three years to stay sharp. However, I am afraid that the effort in Washington state is the begining of a slippery slope for motorcyclists. If we are to demand more rigorous training and license requirements for motorcyclists over age 40, should we not do the same for automobile drivers? Consider this recent case from Oregon:

A fire chief from Canada was killed and his wife seriously injured Monday when their motorcycle collided with a car on Highway 30 east of Astoria, the authorities said.

Karl Umstatter, 43, chief of the volunteer fire department in Onoway, Alberta, died at the scene. Darlene Umstatter, 43, was taken by rescue helicopter to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland.

According to the Oregon State Police, the Umstatters, both wearing helmets, were traveling westbound when Elmer Manor, 84, of Astoria attempted to make a turn and pulled into the motorcycle’s path.

The motorcycle crashed into the driver’s side of Manor’s car.

Elmer Manor and his wife, Margaret, 84, had minor injuries.

Had Mr. Manor been required to take additional driver training or been subject to more rigorous licensing requirements, might this accident have been avoided?

I know that I am tweaking the nose of the largest politically active demoigraphic in the country and the odds of sucessfully restricting the driving priveleges of seniors are pretty slim. Still, if we are going to raise the bar for over-40 motorcyclists in the name of safety shouldn’t we do the same for other vehicle operators?

Of course we should! It’s perfectly logical and the morally and ethically right thing to do.

Will we do it? Hell no! Everyone knows all car drivers are perfect, nothing is ever their fault (”I didn’t see the motorcycle officer”) and since they already had training when they were 16, what else could they possibly learn?

This is why, even though I love living in this country, we are one of the most backward, barbaric and ignorant societies on the planet. Anyone without a serious political voice is ignored (women, blacks, gays, and of course motorcyclists). Tiered licensing and mandatory re-training and testing is the correct solution for ALL drivers/riders. Can we see the rightness of it? Yes! Will it get implemented? Not in a million years!!!

Keep your eyes open for those “challenged” drivers. (90%)

Amen brother. Here in Florida our outgoing Gov and his cabinet have advocated mandatory rider education for ALL motorcyclists, repeat, ALL motorcyclists. It’s pretty much a daily occurence to have a 70 or 80 something driver pull out in front of a biker or another car. Or how about the lady who hit the gas instead of the brakes, tore off a guys leg, and rammed into a grocery store? But do ya think anybody is calling for additional testing or driver training for seniors? Not on yer life! And just where the hell are they going to train all those people? There ain’t enough training sites in the entire Southeast to train all the riders in Florida. But hey, it’s a nice idea.

At the tender age of 34, you old farts better stay sharp and educated. I have mentioned it here before, but my AZ driver’s license is good until I’m 65. It does not expire until 2036!!! Truth be told, I don’t know enough about it to know if there are intervals for testing, but c’mon…

I used to drive through Sun City, AZ - the milkshake heaven. It was more than weekly that I saw serious operator error that almost caused an accident.

I am all for testing, but we better be prepared for the ramifications. Someone has to pay for our seasoned citizens to get around after they are no longer able to drive. No politician has the balls to smack that demographic with driver testing AND levy a tax to pay for transporting all the newly immobile.

Its a touchy subject, but I think you have to error on the side of life versus cost. I have the utmost respect for my elders…especially here in AZ as it seems that a helluva lot of them have Veterans / Purple Heart license plates. But again, logic says that certain abilities need to be met.

Heh - mandatory motorcycle training seems discriminatory. I think we should get the ACLU in on something useful for once. Everyone needs to meet certain criteria. It would be fitting as I heard a quote from Jeb Bush: “If you’re not getting sued by the ACLU at least once per year as governor, you’re probably not doing a good job”.

In some states including this one, older drivers can take a defensive driving course and get a cut on insurance. The courses are given by AAA, AARP and perhaps others. At least this is a step in the right direction.
