Filling the Mille ‘R’ Gap

Now that my RSVR has been effectively spread all over the planet, there is a void that needs to be filled. The truth is that its a perceived void since my sport bike riding time is limited with two toddlers these days…and I’m cool with that. The reason for the sale was simply that in order to hit the good twisties local to me, it takes no less than a 2pm return time regardless with a 7:30 departure. That’s the reason I haven’t done it since my road trip to Laguna Seca for MotoGP.
I’m taking the simple route on this one. Its called dirt-biking in the desert . Now that I have some fundage in the ‘bike account’ from the parting out of my RSVR, I have some financial freedom to play a little without discretion…the best kind of money to have. Don’t get me wrong, I will eventually have three bikes again (street for me, street for us, and dirt). I don’t actually know what I’m going to do yet, but I have some ideas.
Anyway, my buddy Dwayne called me on a short notice and wanted to go hit the trails, so I obliged. What a ball. Even though we have been riding the more technical stuff (not too tight mind you), it’s still a rush, it’s still an incredible workout, and its still riding.
The difference - door to door in three hours. My main area for riding is about five miles from my house. I spend minimal time commuting and maximum time riding the good stuff. It’s going to be my main source of ‘fix’ when I need one. The challenge is to not get injured. It seems that with most of the people I know who ride both street and dirt, the injuries have been from the dirt-side. I’ve had one of each, but my dirt get-off was stupid and an unearned error (read: operator error with no glory story).
Do I miss my RSVR? Absolutely. It was the best sport bike I have ever owned. I just have to spend my time more wisely these days and the dirt option maximizes the saddle time and maintains a very high grin-factor.
