More Phoenix motorcycle rides….

Another day off of work (When do I have to go back anyway) and some time with the lady and another easy day ride.

So we took off from our West Phoenix home down I-10, took exit #103 and worked our way to 339th Ave (BTW: Their are 597 Ave’s in Maricopa County) and headed north. 339th ave is also known as Wickenburg road. I guess at one time it was a dirt road to Wickenburg and when they paved it it was easier to go straight up 339th till they hit the dirt trail. I am not sure, but Wickenburg roads main purpose in life is to give gravel hauling trucks a place to check out their top speeds. We have gotten behind the trucks and they pull away from us doing 20+ over the speed limit. I am gathering the police just don’t worry much if the truckers hurt themselves, not much other traffic to hurt most of the time anyway.

Heading up Wickenburg road you reach a lovely intersection and an encouragement to make a right turn. If you head straight you drop off onto a gravel road heading 10+ mile to the rock quarry Turn left and you get an 4×4 adventure. We took the right turn option, and worked our way up to Wickenburg.

Now the wife is on the motorcycle learning curve and really is easily scared. I let her go into the lead as we got to the corners so she could self pace. It was fun to watch her make nice right turns and struggle with making left turns. Seems she gets a bit scared in left turns and slows down a bit, which makes her line not all that straight. But to be honest she is doing better than the speed limit most of the time, and I am rather happy she is doing well.

We took a break in Wickenburg at the local Safeway and made the return trip home. Julie (the wife) worked on going faster in left turns and looked better from my seating position Most of the time she was 15 to 20mph over the speed limit or the suggested speed for the corner. Overall she is doing well and it’s fun to watch her learn and progress.

Talking about fun, on the way back we came to that same corner. I watched Julie whiz though the corner and then get confused if she should pass a few dirt trucks half parked on the shoulder I took the lead and she followed and all was good. I later found out that Julie actually was confused at the intersection. She did not know if she should turn or not, but was not going to head down the dirt road in front of her. So she made the turn but was all a panic and scared. Stupid old me, did not notice and figured all was good.

Well it’s Friday and now I am off looking for a track bike…
