Roadracing World Track Day Directory

For those of you who are interested in attending a track day, but don’t know where to start, I have some good news.  Roadracing World has released a track day directory.  I do not own this book, but have been an on and off subscriber to RRW since 1993.  Its, in my book, the best motorcycle magazine for my needs today.  Drawing on the quality of their current magazine, I feel safe to recommend the following:

A couple important things are also discussed such as prep’ing your bike and you mind.  These are things that I had to learn on my own back in the day I attending track days and running AMA/CCS and WERA.  There were classes at the

The must have gear…

Here is what gear I must have and why.

For starters:

*Leather Motorcycle Jacket - Leather protects your skin from road rash. Most motorcycle leather is cow hide. My jacket in the picture is lamb. There are a bunch of other hides on the market that are usable as protection from road-rash. Like I said, Cow is the most common. Lamb is not recommended as it is thinner than and not as durable as Cow against abrasion. (The zipper on my cow jacket broke, so this is my fallback jacket.) I have heard that the ideal leather to wear is Kangaroo as it is extremely abrasion resistant and lighter than Cow hide.

Since my lamb jacket doesn’t have any quilted lining,

I will take the small one, please!

Devious behaviour can, at times, be justified by the end. As in the end justifying the means. Sometimes you crave something so badly that selling your wife, your soul; your LP’s of Bob Dylan seems a mere trifle - just to satisfy that craving…..

I was 17 years old and had just been side-swiped by a doddering octogenarian, resulting in my Honda MB5 being written off. Not having wheels drove me crazy, which in turn drove my parents crazy and soon we were tyre-kicking at bike shops across town. Having dwarfed my 50cc Honda my parents agreed that a bigger motorcycle would be in order, up to a maximum of 500cc.

At the second shop we visited there were only two potential

AZTrackDay - April 23rd, 2006

Hi Gang,

This past weekend found the wife and I out at the track playing road racer. Nothing to big happened, expect for the normal stuff.

The highlights are…

- The Harbor freight trailer worked ok, it rattles and sounds like a $500 trailer that it is.

- We got to the track late, and the gate was not open when we got their.

- The track time started late and they combined the intermediate and expert groups. I am not ready for the expert group as I am just way slower (by 5 seconds a lap)

- The wife used our new video camera to video tape me.

- We noticed I had my front tire and rim on my GSXR750, backwards. Lucky

New Dirt Bike Low Reached Today

Ugh.  I thought this day would never happen.  I have disgraced my dirt bike and my priorities.

This morning I did the unthinkable - I drained gas out of my dirt bike to fuel my lawn mower .

Have I no shame?

Motorcycle Lean Angle & “Chicken Strips”

I’m going to rip this off from the Aprilia Forum because the opening comment to a thread titled “Chicken Strips, Some or None?” is a worthy discussion to have.
Is any amount of chicken strips acceptable on a bike thats ridden on street only? Pretty new to sport bike riding and still have about 1/2 of virgin tire showing. At Lee parks school of cornering I was told that I had 6 inches to touch down with knee. Just 900 miles on the bike and could not relax enough to make it happen in that one 6 hour lesson. Also right side showing little less wear. Sissy or not?
The first thing that comes to mind is “AHHHHH!”.  No really…I think

MotoCourse in the House

One of the first articles I submitted on this site was on how to to get a copy of the best annual summary of motorcycle roadracing on the planet: MotoCourse This annual wrap up of MotoGP, World Superbike, AMA Superbike, British Superbike, Isle of Man and even Sidecars has some of the best writing and photographs of everything roadracing. The inside stories, especially as it applies to technology are very informative.

This is the 30th year of publication and personally I’ve been collecting these since 1992. I even bought back issue to 1988 so that I would have Kevin Schwantz’s entire GP career documented. Maybe someday I collect all the way back to the beginning

A cruiser life for me

I was asked today why I ride a cruiser, why I don’t get a sports bike.  I realize that most women my age aren’t cruiser riders, that younger riders tend to gravitate more to the sports bikes, and that I am the exception.

I ride a cruiser for a few reasons.  The first is riding position.  I knew I would be riding my bike long distances, and that my bike and I would go on many long road trips together.  I researched this when I was first looking at bikes, and read over and over that cruisers were much better suited for long distance riding.

However, you need to find a cruiser that is comfortable to you.  I have something like a

HD Ratio: Harley Davidson dominates the DC Motorcycle Classifieds

I like to read the motorcycle classifieds in my local paper for several reasons:

1) I might find something I’m interested in purchasing.

2) I love to see how people try to disguise a POS bike.

3) I love to see the optimism of people asking as much as they paid for their pride and joy new, even with many years and miles under the wheels. Hope springs eternal!

But I also read the classifieds to see what the current trends are in motorcycling. This past Friday’s Washington Post classifieds turned a bright light on the situation here locally, but I also think it reflects similar trends in the US market.

Of the over 50 ads for used motorcycles, I observed the following breakdown:

Over 50% were for

HRES 731 IH - Commending the Patriot Guard Riders

The Patriot Guard Rider’s have now received a federal commendation for the work that they do (even though I am a proud member, I have not participated yet…that’s a good thing).  Representative Jerry Moran of Kansas introduced a Bill on March 16, 2006 that commends the Patriot Guard Riders for shielding mourning military families from protesters and preserving the memory of fallen service members at funerals.  The text of the Bill is here:
