Parking My Futura

I had the revelation today that my wife married an outlaw. In some ways I am amused, and in others I am disappointed as a Rule of Law kind of guy. I have no idea how my head got shove up my arse so far, but I have mentally convinced myself that the Futura was legal to ride. It’s not. I still have not passed emissions, and in turn, I haven’t even transfered the title yet.
Again, I have no idea how this slipped my little pea-brain but it did. I had the revelation when I got to work this morning with th odometer just turning past 9k miles. That nice round number got me thinking about how many mile it had when I bought it in January. The answer is 6000. It arrived at my house with 1000 miles from my buddy riding it back from NorCal to Phoenix. The math - I have put on about 2k miles with Kalifornia plates. Most commuting, but some mountain twistie miles.
On one hand I am mildly amused that I haven’t had any legal problems. First of all, the bike is red. Second, its reasonably loud (a Staintunes system with an H-pipe) even with the baffles in. And third, the AZ police are not kind to out-of-state plated vehicles. The AZ plate fees are so high that people keep their out of state plates for as long as possible. I guess you wouldn’t keep a Kalifornia plate as a means to save money…
On the other hand, I am a little disappointed at how big of a moron I have been. Not that I ride like a mainac on my commute, but still I am the +9 over the speed limit kind of guy on highways. It would have been a messy set of tickets I am sure. Its also worth noting that my job depends on a clean license (OK there is a little margin there) to drive our lease and test vehicles.
The reason is that I have not passed emissions yet. Once I clear that hurdle, I’ll get the thing transfered into my name. But I am taking action this week(end). The solution is two-fold. First, I am burning some smog-reducer additive in this current tank of fuel. Second, I will be loading the original “01″ map into the ECU tomorrow as its the leanest version. I am hoping that solves my problem. I am also hoping that I do not lose or screwe up my existing map as the bike runs real strong. It amy be running too strong as I am only getting about 35mpg right now.
I’ll fill in the details of success or failure with the TuneBoy software tomorrow.

Motorcycles make normally responsible people INSANE …… in a good way! I’m trying to think of ways to run one set of plates on all six of my bikes. After all, I can only ride one at a time
