Keep or Pitch Old Motorcycle Mags?

Ever since my wife and I moved to Arizona (the land of no basements), we have had to change our lifestyle with ragards to being pack-rats.  In Michigan, we had a basement.  WOW was that a good thing.  Yeah it was finished, but it had two utility rooms where we could simply put stuff that we weren’t sure needed disposal.  Without a basement, storage is at a premium.

When I say lifestyle change, I have been hit twice.  First was when I got married.  Even though my wife moved into my house, for some strange reason things still changed.  Lng gone were the days of bachelorhood where I had buddies living with me.  That house was made for guys with an attached 2.5 car garage and another detached 2.5 car garage.  And don’t you dare think that my motorcycles were cold over the winter.  No way - I had the coolest family room and dinig room of all.

The dining room consisted of a Ducati 916 and an FZR1000 while the family room had my CBR900RR along a wall as an art piece.  I also had project motorcycles in the basement.  Things were different back then.

Then came the Arizona move.  My God did we donate a lot of crap when we finally got settled.  Now, I wouldn’t now what to do with a basement.  Who am I kidding - I would love it!  What I am trying to say is that we live lean and mean with regards to ’stuff’.  We keep what we need and donte the rest.

This brings me to the dilemma - To keep or scrap my old (already read) mags.  I will likely keep the Roadracing World versions, but probably not CW and Motorcyclist.  Its interesting how they all do the same reviews within a month or so.  I think they call each other up so they can always have slightly different results…but I digress.

I know what you’re thinking:  You cannot store one friggin’ box?  My response is that I don’t want to store the box if its not warranted.  Aside from a little research just prior to my trip to Motoczysz, I have never looked back at a motorcycle mag for reference…even the tech-talk stuff.  The problem I have is that this is motorcycle related.  I always have a hard time parting with motorcycle stuff.  Throw away my 80’s holed out jeans if you want, but I gotta take my time with ridding the house of biker mags.

What say you?

I say, send them to me :)
Just the thought of those mags going in the trash gives me the chills.
I even bought some 1970’s chopper mags of some guy at a biker forum a while ago, to save them from that horrible fate.

I’m with Jesper. At all cost, preserve the magazines. I give the same advise when it comes to books. So, if you’ve enjoyed a book or a magazine, it’s worth keeping.

I have a closet in the garage full of old MC mags. They would be 12′ tall if all put in one pile. Another 2′ of Service Manuals for every bike and car I’ve ever owned.
I have had occasional luck selling some on eBay. Sold the “Dirt Bike” collection there for $1 an issue in a single auction.
I do tend to go back and look up articles on bikes I am considering buying.

well, you could always get a binder or two filled with the plastic sheets that hold paper. then go through your magazines cut out all the articles of interest and toss the rest. that way you keep all the things you need and like while cutting down on the amount of room they take up. not to mention that going through all the old mags would be fun.

Toss ‘em. There’s clearly potential value in them in the future, but honestly, are you *really* going to realize that potential? Be thankful for the memories they gave you in the moment and move on to the next memory waiting around the corner. Post them on eBay and get your $5.00 they are worth now and call it better than even.
