2 Wheel Tuesday no more :(

Tuesday passed and no more 2 wheel Tuesday to watch. I have known about the passing of the show for a few weeks, thanks to the posts on the WERA board. I had not made a big deal about the show passing before, because it just had not sunk home.

I watched the last episode with a bit of melancholy feeling, as it was the last. The show was not the big final exit I had hoped for, but just a quiet end to a good show. Now don’t get me wrong “2 wheel Tuesday” was not the best TV show ever, but I think it has a place in this world.

I am strange (everyone knows that) and I really like TV shows that are just good information. I don’t really like shows that deal with killing people (My wife likes CSI, but it pisses me off to watch it) and I don’t enjoy things that are silly and made up. I love PBS, as many shows are what I like to watch. I enjoy watching This Old House and thinking why they don’t just tear the whole place down and replace it with something new. Basically I think This Old House is the greatest TV show ever, no one dies and the show is interesting, at least to me.2 Wheel Tuesday

So now “2 Wheel Tuesday” is gone, and in the void left behind a new show will take its place. Superbikes is replacing the show and look for another Blog on how I feel about this stunting show as a show on its own.

There is a void now in the motorcycling world, now that Greg is not on TV. The blatant plugs for roadracingworld magazine and other parts are gone. The weekly report on the races that SPEED just covered is gone. The rapid fire silly questions by Greg to racers are gone. So are a few segments that were filmed that probably will never see the light of day.

But the loss for me, is the loss of exposure of US road racing, especially the riders. We identify our favorite rider by his leathers and helmet color. But we rarely get to see and hear from these personalities with their gear off. It was wonderful to watch interviews with mid level racers. Guys on the AMA grid that did not finish first at each race. Though “2 Wheel Tuesday” the face of American road racing was represented. This is the loss we have, a place for racers to get some support and present themselves.

All shows have a moment in the sun, and it was a good 3 year run. I am sure the demographics, viewer ship and other aspects were not enough to continue the show. Maybe people like myself are to blame, with our TIVO boxes I am no longer connected to show schedules and commercials.

The only parts of the show worth a damn were the interviews with racers (even though Greg’s scripted questions were mostly as shallow and uncontroversial as possible) and reports by actual developers of new technologies and products (same lack of in-depth reporting here). The rest of the show was info-mercial nonsense. I tried to like Mr. White but found he had the same disease as our politicians (never wanted to rock the boat or express a genuine opinion). And for is lack of balls, the AMA in it’s infinte wisdom, gave him some type of “acheivement” award for being about as interesting as a blank sheet of paper!

I say good riddence. My only disappointment is the fact we’ll still have to listen to him bother racers right before a race, when they need to be focusing on doing one of the most dangerous and demanding jobs on the face of the planet (ever wonder why Mat Mladin is always “taking care of other business” when Greg’s trying to find him on the grid).

Until SPEED wants to put on a real motorcycle show, I’d rather there was none at all. I’m tired of weed through all the baby food trying to find some meat.

Rhino, tell us how you really feel!

I didn’t think “2 Wheel Tuesday” was a bad show at all. It started off as one hour magazine style show that covered many aspects of motorcycling. I can rememeber segments on trials riding, supermoto/supermotard, and touring - where else do you get to see stuff like that on TV?

SPEED set the show up to fail by cutting it down to half an hour, getting rid of the produced segements, and making Greg White a cheerleader for the channel’s other non-motorcycle related shows. Did any of you catch the show when they had to tie it into the beginning of NASCAR season? Phewww!

As many have lamented, SPEED seems to have lost their way once they were bought by the Fox Network. Their MotoGP coverage is bare bones at best, try and find AMA road racing or World SuperBike broadcasts. I don’t mind the chopper shows, “American Thunder” or “V-Twin Magazine” - I’ve got a soft spot in my heart for long Dick Allen style springers and rigid frames. The “Build or Bust” and whatever that chopper reality shows they had are just garbage. And don’t get me started on how much I hate “Pinks” - flashbacks of high school street racing arguements uttered out of the mouths of grown men. Pathetic.

SPEED channel’s biggest problem is that they are the only game in town. When that is the case, you don’t have to try very hard. Has anyone has ever seen the UK show “Top Gear?” IMHO, that is a good example of a proper show about cars for people who like cars. The same could be done with a motorcycle show with a little imagination and a little $$.

I wasn’t motivated to see the replacement for “2 Wheel Tuesday” - “Superbikes.” Is it any good?

stuporbikes is NO GOOD unless you are capable of using ’stuntaz’ in a sentence, in a positive sentence.

racing is great, but interviews and news commentary are what let us get to know the racers and the storylines that make a season or a league interesting. I even found value in the ‘info-mercial’ segments as Rhino calls them — they were still about motorcycling. I frequently watched much of the show in fast-forward, but I watched EVERY show.

Ok, M in LA, I’d like to do a burnout on the top of Greg’s chrome dome!

You’re right, the show was much better at the beginning when it was an hour and I seem to remember Dave Despain hosted it? (before he turned traitor and went 4-wheels commentator)

Motorcyclist even had a fairly decent half hour show for a year, a couple ago.

Remember when 2-wheeled Tuesday meant motorcycle races and related motorcycle shows ALL DAY! And if you missed the races on Sunday and even the following Tuesday, you usually had a chance to watch (or tape) them later that week or maybe even the next. Sometimes you could even catch it again during the winter. Ah, the good ole days!

I pretty much just watch the races now. And even then, they rarely interview all three podium finishers like they used too.

That’s what I liked the best. I cannot say that I have watched the Greg White version ever. I lost interest when TWT stopped being an all-day event. I can even remember my wifed getting pissed from me hoggin the TV on Tuesday nights after work.

We have a small chance for revival and it is linked to the success of Nicky Hayden. He has already impacted MotoGP tix sales on ebay. A month ago, Flag Room tix were goin without a bid at $500 for ‘Buy it Now’. Not a chance today - they are in the $1200 for pairs right now. Maybe…just maybe. Go Nicky!

OK…my opinion: TWT was nothing to brag about but it was all we had. The graphics in the beginning of the show reminded me of some computer generated crap from the 1980s. The arrangement of the show was pretty shallow and too much info was covered far too quickly.

I would have enjoyed some more structure: first segment, updates on past weekends races; second segment, maybe an interview with one of the mid level guys from one of those races, talk about the track, setting the bike up, etc.; third segment, something technical, not just a plug for Yosh or Dunlop, teach us something and announce more in depth info being available on the web site; fourth section, wrap it up and tell us what races will be on next week, etc.

All in all Greg didn’t do that bad or that good of a job. It was nice that he had limited personal experience regarding racing but his whole persona was just not a good fit for a lukewarm show like TWT.

The new show - Superbikes…looks quite weak in my opinion. The first two shows did not kick of with a big bang as I would have expected…the just kind of spun around and fizzled. Nothing impressive.

There are only two reasons I subscribe to SpeedTV. Number one is to watch Motorcycle Roadracing, and Two is to watch shows about Motorcycle Roadracing. That being said, 2WT was the only regularly scheduled show I ever watched on SpeedTV in the 7 years I’ve subscribed to SpeedTV (Speed Channel).

When I first subscribed to Speed Channel, The 2WT show did not exist as a show on its own. I subscribed solely for the Motorcycle Roadracing coverage, 2WT meant nothing but motorcycle shows all day. Although there are arguments both ways, I have to say that I still prefer the coverage that was present when I first subscribed. There were always multiple airings of races, in case I missed or forgot to record one. The rebroadcasts may have been at late or odd hours, but it is easy enough for me to record a show. Now the only thing you can find on late night/early morning is “paid programming.”

When there was what I would call a reduction in Motorcycle Roadracing air time on Speed that is about the time 2WT came along as a separate show. I saw this as a way to compress all the racing news and other interesting motorcycle news into a single show, and in general was a good idea to make up for the fact that other Motorcycle Roadracing programming had declined.

There are a few things that 2WT did for the motorcycling community as a whole (unbiased towards any particular group). These things must continue to happen, and I feel it is SpeedTV’s duty to do this. Number one is that motorcycle government regulation issues need to be brought to light, and motorcyclists need to be encouraged to fight for their right to ride. Number two is that “safe” riding practices (wearing helmets, etc.) must be advocated in a manner that does not alienate any one. Greg did an excellent job of both in a show that had the correct audience.

While these next few items may not be SpeedTV’s duty, they are things that I would like to see in some format on SpeedTV, even if it is not in the 2WT format. These things are highlights of Motorcycle Roadracing over the previous week, and up close interviews with professional Motorcycle Roadracers.
