I just sent this letter to the AMA.

AMA,

A motorcyclist was killed recently here in Vestal, NY. The scene of the crime was the classic “left turn into rider” scenario. The driver is being charged with “failure to yield”. That’s it!

Below is the article from the local paper.

Sincerely,
“First name” “Last name”
“AMA Member Number”

VESTAL, NY - The Vestal Police Department has identified Scott Beblavy, 46, of Vestal, as the motorcycle driver who was killed Friday in a crash on Route 26 at the intersection of Hazel Drive.

Beblavy was driving south on Route 26 on a 2004 HD motorcycle. The driver of a 2004 Buick - Evelyn Neebe, 72, of Vestal - was attempting to make a left turn onto Hazel Drive from Route 26 north and drove into the motorcycle’s path.

Beblavy was pronounced dead at the scene. Neebe was transported to Wilson Regional Medical Center. She will be charged with failure to yield the right of way pending further court action, Vestal police said.

That’s no news.
When are we motorcyclists going to quit pissin’ and moanin’ about “cagers” turning in front of us and running us off the road. The same lousy drivers are are turning in front of cars and running other cars off the road. “sh@t happens!” Deal with it! I ride every day and every day somebody (including other motorcyclists) does something stupid. In order to be a safe rider you have to ride defensively. If you see a car about to make a left turn, watch it closely and allow yourself an escape. If a car pulls along-side watch it and slow down or accelerate as necessary to avoid a collision. No-one is responsible for your safety but you!

Highlander must not ride a lot if you have to learn to deal with it. I’ve had a drunk driver back into me and the police did nothing. Where do you go on a bike when the driver is coming back at you? “sh@t happens” is no excuse for drivers to run others off the road. Its about time law enforcement started doing their job and get these morons off the highways. If they’re too old or too blind. Tough, let them walk to the store. And don’t get me started on drunk drivers, 2nd offense, take the car and sell it. If enough people wrote their law makers, it would make a difference. Flood their office with mail and tie up the phone lines daily. You don’t just have to deal with it. Speak up before they kill “you”.

I live near Vestal, New York and knew the rider that was killed in the crash. It goes much deeper than she just turned left and caused the wreck that killed him. My wife went to the calling hours and was talking some of his friends and they told her that on the accident report it states that she told the police that she saw him but thought she could make it around the corner before he made to the spot where the accident took place. If it had been another car coming or a big truck she would have thought twice before pulling out. Most people don’t take in to account that if there is a wreck that the rider will get the blount of the injuries.

Highlander might feel differently if it was his loved one who was killed. I’m sure your family might also. Scott taught me how to ride, as a passanger on his bike hundrends of times I always felt safe. He had been riding for thirty plus years and he loved every minute! I am saddened by your selfish comments. He was a loving father to his son,a dear friend to many, we love and miss him. A mans life has been taken at an early age, a father taken from his son. All because of a careless 72 year old lady who was impatient. Do you have children highlander? This was a traggic accident and personally, am having a hard time “DEALING WITH IT” I hope you never have to. So forgive me, I’m not in the mood for your lessons in saftey!!!

I agree that safety is no accident and that we motorcyclists must take the utmost care when riding. But the comment by highlander is ridiculous. Motorcyclists are not super-human. There are always going to be some things beyond the control of even the best motorcyclists. It behooves all motorists to drive/ride safely and defensively, not just bikers. Incompetent or drunk drivers are a threat to everyone on the road and the penalties should be severe for the often deadly violations like right of way violations.

Stantheman and Michelle:
I am sorry for your loss. Nothing good came out of this episode and it serves as a good reminder to hold all cages in a soft contempt.

Godspeed to Scott.

It was a tragic accident!!! The driver of the car was not a careless impatient 72 year old lady. And Scott was not a careless impatient 46 year old man. Why don’t we wait until the police do their job before we become GOD and make our own judgments. Thank you.

If she was not careless then why did the accident happen? I beleive the police have done their jobs and have stated that evelyn neebe turned in front of him, thats why she was ticketed for faliure to yeild the right of way. Hello do you even know what your talking about?? no one is playing god,we are simply stating facts. Accidents happen because one of the involved were careless, in this case it was the driver of the car. Do you know either of the parties, or are you just sticking your nose in to something you know absoutly nothing about?

Yes Michelle, I do know the parties involved.

How sad for all parties involved, the man’s family and the woman and her family.

It was a horrible horrible event for both parties. Accidents happen every day and no one knows exactly what happened at this accident as none of us were there.
