Motorcycles in Mexico City

A few weeks ago, I spent some time in Mexico City, Mexico doing the work thing.  In total we deove about some 400km or so of Mexico City traffic during our stay.  If you think Los Angeles or Miami has crazy traffic jams, then stay away from Mexico City.

I am pretty sure its the most populated city in the world and the traffic shows it.  Everywhere throughout the day was possible of being in bumper to bumper…unless you were on the toll roads.  And yes it was VERY third world.

Laws are mere suggestions and there are “good cops” and “bad cops”.  The good ones will let you go.  The bad ones will let you go for a fee.  Armed police / security guards at every bank site had either shotguns or full-auto machine guns.

Traffic laws are non-existant.  There’s a helmet law but its not enforced.  Traffic light and signs are used if its convenient.  A turn signal is for the weak.  The way to get over a lane or two is to ‘just do it’…they’ll stop.

Out of all this, motorcycles were lane-splitting on the highways, navigating through the stopped traffic, some of them without helmets.  Most were wearing full protection I must admit.

I wouldn’t want to drive there let alone commute on a motorcycle.  That said, my lack of patience and the absolute CF of gridlock that is Mexico City, I would have to consider it.  They were the only ones making progress.
