MC Blog With OUR Copied Content

They say imitation is the finest form of flattery.  Maybe, but only if credit is given.  I am neither professional moto-journalist nor an overzealous ‘owner’ of the articles I / We write here.  But I have to admit that I’m pretty annoyed right now.

While its the labor of love, this stuff takes time, care, and thought to produce and knock out…at least from my little brain.  And while motorcycle blog aggregator sites exist based on RSS feeds, proper credit is given as to the origin of the article.  Well, I found a blog that has a bunch of our articles simply with the author’s name changed.

It’s the blog section of a commercial site called leatherup.com which sells imported leather products among other things.  Obviously the intent of these ‘attachment sites’ to commercial sites is to generate traffic.  I’m cool with that.  I’m not cool with the fact that all of the articles in this section but one WE wrote.  Yet these are simply exact duplicates with the new author “Jesse” installed.

Fishing through the site a little, there are more, but this is the biggest example.  Is it a big deal really?  Nah.  I just think its weak.  I hope the authors of other bike blogs go check it out and look for their articles too.  I noticed that I’m not on the blogroll, so if you are, you’re probably not duped.

Anyway, I thought I would pass this along.  I think I will spend the week leaving some choice comments, but it looks like the moderation is in full-swing…go figure.  Don’t buy stuff from these guys.  Its the principle of the matter.

You’re absolutely right, AngryBob! This is a cheap trick, and an insult to the rest of the motorcycle bloggers.

I do mirror posts, but in every single instance I credit the author and add my own color commentary. I also link directly to the source article/blog to which I’m attributing. That’s just good manners. In fact, I’ve even quoted and linked to MotorcycleBloggers a time or two!

The easies way to address this is to just encourage motorcyclists to speak with their pocketbooks. If a blogger has been plagarized by LeatherUp.com, they should encourage their friends to never shop there. That’s what I’ll do until they can practice proper blogging etiquette.

Writing posts based on other bloggers posts is a big part of blogging, but to direct copy and not even give due credits is just plain stupid.

Let’s hope our friends at leatherup learns their lesson and begins to write their own damn shit. If not there’s plenty of us to throw some nasty publicity at them. But let’s give them a chance to wise up first.

Wow! I couldn’t agree with you more. Beach and I pour our hearts and souls into our site, TheBeachCruiser. As with you, it’s a labor of love. We don’t even cover our costs yet.

There are certain sites that have ripped off our content as well. Did we get angry? Sure, a little. But mostly it’s just a shame. If these people are too dumb or too lazy to come up with their own content, I agree with you that we should boycott purchasing any of their merchandise. It reflects badly on the entire industry.

Yeah, it happens and it sucks.

I saw photos from my site appear on another a while back & linked so I had the pleasure of providing bandwidth to theives.

Moving files & replacing the ’stolen’ images with a picture of a hairy arse fixed the problem in no time.

I’m truely sad to see that guy at Leatherup.com doing this. My husband & I have bought a few things from them and love them. Have you written to the company? They may not be aware of what this guy is doing. They need to can him! I would hope he stops stealing material from others, or I will take my business elsewhere. Please keep us posted on what you find later.

We would like to apologize to the whole community, especially to angrybob.

Jesse is no longer with us. Last week on Thursday, we found out what he has done, and on Friday we told him not to come to work anymore.

Our intention was to bring a decent entertaining content to our biker community. Unfortunately, one of our team members took liberty with this task. As a company we don’t condone any imitation, or plagiarism in any way.

He pointed out what sections he took and those sections have been deleted permanently from our site. We can’t allow anybody to copy, or plagiarize someone else’s hard work. Because of his actions Jesse has been terminated.

Once again, we apologize. His actions weren’t acceptable at all.

Kindest Regards,

Hmmm…mixed feelings there Nick. I was thinking a wedgie (delivered by me) would be punishment enough. That said, I didn’t care for the knowing intent to change the author and some of the “we” and “I” words as well as the separate picture hosting.

You do what you think is right. Regardless, I appreciate you being a stand-up guy and able to right some simple wrongs.

Heh - I was going to put a pic of my hairy arse for all the images over there if they were still directly linked. Damn…back to being an adult.

Thanks.
