Loud Pipes? Big Fines.

I love living in Arizona. For all the RED state flag waving, gun on hip, freedom loving statements of the local population, many areas of Arizona are more interested in controlling peoples lives. Scottsdale’s 1st in nation speed cameras on the loop 101 freeway. Avondale, Chandler, Tempe, Phoenix and Scottsdale’s red-light and intersections speeding cameras are some of my favorite RED state additions.Carefree Noise Limit

But now Carefree, AZ has upped the level of controlling the motorcycle lives by posting signs of an 80db noise limit with fines up to $750.

Now as we all know, I think the whole Loud Pipes saves lives argument is a bunch of BS. I have been promoting responsible motorcycling by recommending that a loud motorcycle is a public nuisance. I have many haters for this position and a quick Google of the Internet finds my Loud Pipe posts discussed on many other motorcycle message boards. I best love how people rewrite my name, as some how that is an insult to me.

People take my responsible motorcycle volume as I am taking the “Fun” out of motorcycling. That the “Sound” of a nice pipe and tuned engine adds great enjoyment to owning a particular motorcycle. In a nutshell I am a big “No Fun” guy wanting to prevent you from being safe by annoying the HELL out of everyone around you.

The fact is, I believe pissing off everyone around you will have some backlash. That backlash is now upon us, as if you like to ride up to Cave Creek, AZ and hang out at a biker bar, you better be quiet. Carefree, AZ is a growing area of the Phoenix metro area. The new members of the community just don’t want to hear your motorcycle when driving though your neighborhood. They don’t like it so much; they don’t wish to be annoyed by it and they are willing to spend
$250,000 to outfit local sheriff cars with boom mikes to measure the noise of motorcycles.

The Loud Pipes Save Lives portion of the motorcycle community is up in arms. They demand their right to upset the general public because it is in the name of safety. They claim how much money they spend, how so many other vehicles like garbage trucks create noise and how they are being discriminated against.

The fact is you are brining this on yourself. Your 110db pipe is not enjoyed by all that hear it. I personally believe that other drivers become MORE disrespectful of loud motorcyclist. Recently I have watched cars speed up as loud bikes drive up along side of loud motorcycles. I watched one SUV driver speed up and cut off the biker to just be in front of the
noise. While you may be noticed because your being a pain in the ass, that does not make it safer for you.

My suggestion: To every biker that believes in Loud Pipes Save Lives, try installing a set of LOUD horns. I have over 350,000mi of motorcycling under my belt, and I am very “Vocal” with the horn on the bike. I love having my Hi and Lo tone Freeway Blasters. When I need to get someone’s attention, the horns get it fast.

If you are using loud pipes for safety and you don’t have a set of after market horns that can wake the dead, then you are a just a jerk annoying the general public. I can’t count the number of times that I have seen a bike with loud pipes, but without a HORN. Be honest and change your motto to Loud Pipes Compensate for my Inadequacies.

HERE HERE I liken LOUD pipes to boom stereo that terrorize urban neighborhoods (just for attention ).
You forgot the arguement of loss of hearing of bikers that have loud pipes .
I am new rider 6 ooo mi a year.(helmet wearing smf graduating loud pipe hating and all )

Wow a two counts that agrees with me… To be honest I think we as riders need to avoid pissing everyone off. If we act as members of society, then society will not be out to get us.
This is also common for other activities. We lost a great track in Avondale, AZ over noise issues. No one complains that Laguna Seca raceway has a noise limit for most uses, outside a few race weekends. I think compromise works in many cases and allows everyone to get along.

I think great care has to be taken in what we ban and why we ban it. Why do you think Carefree, AZ instituted this noise ordinance? Specifically, what kinds of bikes go there bar-hopping?

It is not the sport bikes, I can assure you that. Sport bikes may pass through there on the way to Bartlett Lake, etc, but we do not hang out there. We are not the target / root cause of the complaints.

I would gladly make the argument that the Harley’s with straight pipes:

  • are much more prevelant in that area
  • put out more dB’s than any aftermarket exhaust system
  • can be heard from a much greater distance due to the low frequency (think subwoofer)
  • seem to have riders more prone to whacking the throttle off the light

I think if straight pipes were banned, a lot…and I mean probably 90%…of the bad image from loud pipes would go away.

AB,

I agree with you that the open pipes on HD type bikes are the root cause of the issue.

But I believe all motorcycles need to be respectful of there noise output. Their are some high dollar Ducati’s that put out a bunch of noise with there exhaust systems.

Also the Stunt and Urban Sport Bike crowd does allot to put out noise from there bikes.

All in all I don’t want to make it ONE GROUPS issue. I think we all need to think what we are doing in relationship to motorcycling and it’s basic image. For example, I should slow down a bit and that is a focus for me to enjoy the road and not enjoy the speed…

This is just one more argument that government intrudes upon the freedoms of its citizens. A few snobs complain and push for a law because they have financial backing and some of you “bikers” jump on the band wagon.

Blue jeans, tee shirts, leather, and YES loud pipes are American, born in America for Americans.

Our country is losing its freedoms and it’s because a few complainers make more noise then my pipes.

Although one could debate the utility/safety of loud pipes I think the two main issues are: 1) the public perception of those of us who enjoy riding and 2) Safety. Having grown up in AZ and returning to AZ from a Los Angeles I have noticed that the motorcycle culture is very different here in AZ. Sportbikers are all looked at as imature “squids” while in CA the motorcycle culture regarless of what bike you ride is extremely friendly and the public perception is slightly more accepting….check out the RockStore on a Sat/Sun am ride on Mul. Drive. Sportbikers encompass several different socio-econ classes. In AZ, as responsible bike riders we really do need to be concerned about our preception to the non-riding public. This means riding responsibly at all times. With respect to the safety issue, there is no medical literature that suggests that loud pipes saves lives. Though there is substantial literature suggesting that a good helmet can. In the past year there are several mags that have addressed this issue.

Loud pipes are fun…but they dont save lives…helmets do…”no helmet …no brains.”

GB….see you at the track
