Patriot Guard Mission Complete - USAF Ed Coleman RIP

This morning I was honored to participate as a member of the Patriot Guard Riders in escorting Ed Coleman, retired USAF veteran, from his mortuary to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport.  From there, he will be making his way to his final resting place in Wyoming.  I didn’t know Ed, but it was his request to have the PGR escort him when he passed (I found this out this morning).

Air Force veteran Ed Coleman of Phoenix, AZ passed 21 DEC 06. Mr. Coleman was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross during his service in the Air Force.

This was my first ride with the PGR.  They will get together for many reasons:

  • Escort a retired veteran who has passed away.
  • Meet and ‘receive’ a returning veteran from overseas.
  • Meet and ‘receive’ an enlisted member of our military who as KIA or otherwise.
  • Attend funerals of state-wide fllen soldiers.

NOTE:  It is important to mention that we will only gather upon an invitation from the families.  Period.

The PGR seems to have their operations running smoothly.  We had a police escort and traffic blocked where needed.  His widow and a few family members were in cars in the convoy, and one even rode on the back of the lead bike.

I can honestly say that I was very impressed with how much this gathering was NOT about the PGR, but all about honoring Ed Coleman.  It was a group of bikers (heh…and me) gathered to show respect for the airman and his family.  Nothing more, nothing less.  The gratitude that the widow showed that people cared was priceless.

As a civilian who never served, its my way of saying thanks.  Its about respecting those that did serve.  Its also about ensuring that even though they are gone, they won’t be forgotten.

Thanks for your service Mr. Coleman.  RIP.

I think thats great that you were able to honor Ed Coleman that way. I can only imagine how much that means to the family. I have always admired the patriotism of the people of the United States. My family moved from the States many years ago, but I always kept a place in my heart. We still raise the US flag for the 4th of July and any time there is a national tragedy.
Good on ya Bob.
