U.S. Representative Michael Burgess (R-TX-26) and U.S. Representative Bart Stupak (D-MI-1) recently introduced H.R. 1076, “The HIPAA Recreational Injury Technical Correction Act.” Identical legislation obtained 177 bipartisan cosponsors and passed the full Senate in the 108th Congress.

H.R. 1076 aims at ending health care discrimination for individuals participating in legal transportation and recreational activities-activities like motorcycling, snowmobiling, skiing, horseback riding, and all-terrain vehicle riding.

World SuperBike: Maxed Out

In case you’re a race fan and still haven’t heard, Max Biaggi is leading the World Superbike Series. After the first round, the Italian shares that standing with James Toseland, the two trading wins at the inaugural event of the 2007 season. Both taking 2nd position at the race they didn’t win. MotoGP 800’s slower than the 990’s?

As Rhino said this past weekend was the beginning of the 2007 motorcycle road racing season around the world. While others were interested in WSBK or the upcoming Daytona 200 (ho hum), my attention was focused on the first Official MotoGP test in Jerez, Spain.

2007 is the inaugural season for the 800cc MotoGP bikes. Although it has been known for several years that the MotoGP class would be limited to 800cc from 990cc, I could not find any reasoning behind FIM’s change of displacement. First thought would be to slow the bikes down since Loris Capirossi set the fastest top speed on a MotoGP bike of just over 214 mph / 344.390 kph on his Ducati in 2004.

The other night I got a good laugh when I was looking through this blog’s statistics.  See, I know how you got here, who you are, where you came from…but I digress.  Anyway, this little site was found via a google.com search with the entry “hate my yz426″.  Been there, done that.

I bought my 2000 YZ426f back in late 2001, only a couple of months after I moved to Arizona.  It was from a co-worker and the bike was geared for speed.  I am a trail guy and as time as passed, I have migrated to slower more technical trails versus the high-speed stuff.  Heh - we call them ‘goat trails’ out here.

Motorcycle Gift Baskets

I received an email from the owner of a new idea - to provide gift baskets to those who ride motorcycles.  This kind of basket or bucket would contain things specifically for the rider…not fruit, cheese, or flowers.  Although I suggested that maybe they would need a few different baskets because the needs of the rider segments are very different, they are seeking feedback from those of us who ride.  Any suggestion is welcome.  It is up to them what they implement.

Product Review - Dunlop Qualifiers

I have been a Dunlop guy now for over ten years.  In between my Dunlop loyalties I have ridden Metzeler, Micheln Pilot Power (street compound), Bridgestones (old school Battlax “OE” compound), and Pirelli Dragons.  To be honest, all of today’s major brand tires are excellent and getting better every year.

I had the chance to evaluate the Dunlop Qualifier on my SV650.  The tire sizes I put on that bike were the 120/70/17 & 160/60/17 for the front and rear respectively.  These were brand spankin’ new tires with zero miles on them.  The usage was for a track day at Firebird West in Phoenix (area), Arizona with early morning temps around 45F and warming up to about 80F by 3PM

Driving in Mexico

I have just gotten back tonight from a business trip to Mexico where we drove about 700 miles in two days.  We were in big cities such as Mexico City to small towns such as Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico…home of the blue agave!  The road conditions there make I-94 around Detroit Metro airport seem perfect.

While the expensive toll roads had some sections that were very nice and smooth, most every free road sucked…bad.  There were pot holes, speed bumps, bad patch work, cracks that would eat a motorcycle tire, etc.  Most small towns have cobblestone or dirt or uneven brick roads.  It sucked in a car an I have to think its worse on a bike.  Even thought the traffic is terrible

I had an absolute blast…the most fun I’ve had in months with my clothes on!

I have to admit that I put myself under a little pressure with the MUST of not crashing.  That and the fact that it had been since 2001 since I was on a track had me a little apprehensive in the beginning.  That said, I can think of worse ways to spend a Saturday!

My newly acquired track bike is a ‘99 SV650 that was already converted to the hard life of track beeotch.  There are three reasons I bought this bike: cheap, needs nothing, and excellent reputation for short courses.  All three proved true.
