Fishing vs. Motorcycling

I spent today in a bass tournament on Lake Pleasant here in Arizona.  While I landed an almost four-pounder, we didn’t do very well.  Today’s big boy was 9.53 lbs  .  That said, it was still a great time…and we could have been working.

It’s the first time that I ahve been on a lake in Arizona for an extended period and the scenery (coming from my native Detroit mind you), was incredible.  Lake Pleasant is supposedly a man-made lake via damns, etc.  As for the bass fishing, its pretty good I am told.

In a couple ways, fishing reminded me of my motorcycle sport.  You pick you partners wisely.  You need to be on the same wavelength in terms of seriousness (or lack of in our case).  And at the end of the day, it’s stories will be told and re-told.

There are a few things that are very different for me.  First is the amount of adrenaline that is generated and for how long.  When I reeled in the fish, yeah I was definitely pumped.  But that lasted about sixty seconds.  Of course, I wanted to get the line back in the water ASAP!  In contrast, I can be high as hell on adrenaline for as many miles as the twisties last.

On the positive side, I was able (for once) to sit back, chill out, and enjoy the scenery.

NOTE: Doug - this may shock you, but I forgot to bring a camera.

I think that’s why I enjoy the dirt bike so much - you’re part of (read: in) the elements.  In the mountain twisties, there is no time or extra mental capacity to take on the scenery when its game-on time.

I had a great time.  It’s been many. many years since I have fished for bass.  And while I will more than likely continue fishing as much as my schedule allows, there are no motorcycles in jeopardy of being replaced by a boat!

Fishing and motorcycling sound like a good balance to me.
