In Praise of Suzuki

The following is a Letter to the Editor I sent to Motorcyclist Magazine in reference to the April 2007 article “The GS Papers”. This piece of prose traces Suzuki’s journey from quirky 2-strokes, through competitive 4-strokes to the legendary GSXR line. As an avowed Suzuki fan, this summary gave me perspective of how far Suzuki have come! The multiple photos of a pristine ‘79 GS1000 alone are worth the cover price.

Thanks for the trip down Suzuki Memory Lane. My second motorcycle was an ‘81 GS1100E and it dragged me from practical transportation to lifelong addiction. I finally parted with it after 17 years and 55,000 mile, but immediately bought the first generation Bandit 1200 to replace it.

Just as English bikes will always be a 60s icon, I grew up riding in the ’80s and Japanese bikes will forever be a part of my psyche. Some riders are addicted to the throb of the V-twin, the howl of a triple or the thump of a single, but I will forever be commited to the scream of an inline four.

I’ve owned ten Brand S machines over my 27 years of riding and they continue to be my favorite. While Harley, Honda and Yamaha continue to fight it out for the top rung on the sales ladder, Suzuki goes quietly about the business of producing some of the best motorcycles on the planet. They seem the perpetual underdog and yet continually cross the finish line first in a preponderance of race series. I’ve dabble in several Euro-brands but it seems about every other time I buy a bike it’s got that classically beautiful stylized S on the tank.

Forever Suzuki!

Nice! I too am partial to Suzuki. Sad to see Hopkins crash in the Spanish GP. He was doing well at the time.

I have the mag and will have to crack it open one of these nights. As a GS owner too, I have to say it was a great bike. Heh - I have to admit though that over the years I have switched brands a lot…well it goes in phases.

AB - don’t forget your current trackbike is Brand S! Once you’ve gone Suzuki, you can never get it completely out of your blood. Whether personality, thrill or value, they always have something to offer.

Sheesh - I forgot I even had that bike (seriously). I guess I am a Suzuki owner.

Now I may be wrong Rhino, but isn’t a brand S like a belly button everyone has one anyway? I think thats what makes it so hard to shake. Mabey as a Honda zombie I have slowly lost sight of reality. I have being wrong before…..well thats what my wife says.

JJ - if there’s a brand “everyone” has, it’s most likely a Honda (Honda sales figures have been #1 for several decades now!). As for your perception that Brand S is commonplace, maybe it’s because they’re the bikes you see on the road all the time, because they’re being ridden by the “real” motorcyclists ;-)

I have a deep seated disgust for Honda that I won’t get into because it’s emotional/irrational and I’ll further temper my comments by saying I think Honda probably have the best quality on the market.

There are two brands I have never, and will never own and they both start with the letter “H” (and Hyosung ain’t one of them)!

I think there is a great post in there somewhere.

Rhino - I have to agree with AB. You have no choice now you have to spill it. I know it’s hard but sometimes to get over a horrible experience you have to open up. I truly believe you can be happy on just about any bike. Usally there is somthing or someone that turns people against a brand. Mabey you had a relationship that ended badily and at that moment a Honda bike went screaming by and bamn!!!! Hate’m for life.

JJ - you asked for it and now you’ll get it! I wrote my ideas down yesterday and will need to fill in the details in coming days but look for a separate post soon! Prepare to give-up on Honda permanently!

P.S. - no “relationship” issues related to this hatred, it’s a corporate philosophy thing!

AB - after I make this threatened post, prepare to see some serious numbers in the Comments section (and most assuredly, some hate mail).

Hey good on ya Rhino. Mabey it’s time I made a change anyway. They pulled the dealer licences out of bike shops and gave them to the Honda car dealers up here in Canada anyway. The implications are endless so mabey you can switch my thinking.

FOLLOW-UP……..

I received a personal reply from Mitch Boehm (former Editor of Motorcyclist Magazine).

“Thanks, Michael! Good hearing from ya. Give Snowbird a wave for me, willya?
Best,
Mitch”

Maybe this means I got a shot at making the rag next month?!?!

Mitch grew up in the Salt Lake area before moving to California to pursue his career in motojournalism.
