A Little Disconnect

Crap. About a week ago, my wife handed me my two motorcycle insurance card for this year’s coverage. Great! Good for another year. As I put them in my pocket, I thought to myself…”self, I only have one street bike”. Crap. After a short review of the policy, it turns out that I have been paying on my Caponord that I sold on June 2nd, 2006.
See, I have it made (in my little world). My wife takes care of all the house stuff including paying the bills. In return for the rock-star lifestyle that all engineering incomes allow (that’s a joke), she is blessed with my good looks and charm. What that does mean though is that she really doesn’t know and/or care what’s in the garage. Note to self: That Futura + draining the super-secret motorcycle fund could morph into a Ducati 1098 and no one would be the wiser!
I am absolute that I canceled this policy, but have no way to prove it. I called my insurance guy…
SIDEBAR: Enter the possible root cause of confusion: I didn’t even know his name. There has been some turnover/reassignment/whatever that resulted in my account switching hands. I recall that my last guy Scott was no longer my agent, but had no idea who was. I have no reason to connect the dots, but this kind of turnover of accounts could have caused the problem. END SIDEBAR
…and, as expected, it was someone different. Anyway, he was cool with it and said he would try to submit the refund, but also warned me that there was a good chance I would have to provide some sort of proof.
As of this evening, I have the plate cancelation dated July 28th, 2006 from MVD and the original registration showing that the plate I turned in is indedd for that bike. Why the two month disparity you ask? Have I mentioned I have had an awful past twelve months at MVD???
I bought a BMW 528i back in April of 2006 and, of course, there were title issues that took three months to resolve…in my favor. At that time I went to credit my plate balance toward my new BMW fees and due to the title problem I was told that the credit would be the same, but it will have to wait for all to be fixed. Apparently it is not possible for the MVD to do two transactions on the for the same person! The result was that my BMW saga was fixed on July 28th and my credit was dated then too. GRRRRR.
So all I have to convince the insurance company is my charm, my lack of claims, a couple emails, and the article cited above. I think it will be OK, but we’ll see. Sometimes big companies have big company rules of inflexibility. After all, I am the dumbass, in the end, who was paying the bill.

Your an engineer?? Cool!! Do you ever get to drive a steam engine? WOOOO!! WOOOO!!! Haaa! HAAA! Anyway I feel your pain. I tried to cancel my insurance in the province I moved from and they made it horribly painful with a 2 week fight even though it is illegal to double insure they didn’t care.
