An Inconvenient Truth

EDIT - The real reason I wrote this entry is that AL GORE IS A MORON! And since I have strangely high rankings on google.com, I’m trying to work this in their searches and see how high this can climb the search engines. Now back to the motorcycle stuff…
I must confess. I don’t think I’m the addict of motorcycle that I play on this blog. I tried. I really did. I tried to be a commuter this past season, and it just didn’t happen.
I think its a matter of convenience, the fact that my car get decent fuel economy, and I’m lazy as hell in the morning.
There is nothing more convenient than just jumping in the car and going…regardless of what I’m wearing. Seat heaters, air conditioning, AM radio, and yes the damned cell phone (gasp!) are pretty nice creature comforts too. And finally, the range on my car between fuel fill-ups is over 500 miles. The Futura is just over 200 miles.
The second this is that my car gets between 26 & 27 mpg and that’s not too bad. My previous SUV got about 19 mpg and that was annoying me with a 72 mile round trip. That motivated me to fire up the bike again and save some petro $$$. At 27 mpg, the cost savings doesn’t necessarily outweigh the comforts in the off-seasons: summer - way too friggin’ hot in the afternoon, winter - way too cold in the morning.
Finally, no matter how hard I try, those extra five minutes to get suited up and warm up the bike, just can’t be found. I’m tired and I wear (usually) business casual…bug juice on business casual clothes sucks. Heh - bug juice doesn’t come outta khaki’s that easy! Another five minutes when I arrive, another when I leave, then another when I get home. Twenty minutes adds up to a lot of my time.
My schedule is such that I work out on Monday and Friday, and stay late on Wednesday. That leaves Tuesday and Thursday.
I think I’m going to stick to the spontaneous ride in for pleasure. Although $4/gallon could make me rethink that…again.
