An Inconvenient Truth

EDIT - The real reason I wrote this entry is that AL GORE IS A MORON!  And since I have strangely high rankings on google.com, I’m trying to work this in their searches and see how high this can climb the search engines.  Now back to the motorcycle stuff…

I must confess.  I don’t think I’m the addict of motorcycle that I play on this blog.  I tried.  I really did.  I tried to be a commuter this past season, and it just didn’t happen.

I think its a matter of convenience, the fact that my car get decent fuel economy, and I’m lazy as hell in the morning.

There is nothing more convenient than just jumping in the car and going…regardless of what I’m wearing.  Seat heaters, air conditioning, AM radio, and yes the damned cell phone (gasp!) are pretty nice creature comforts too.  And finally, the range on my car between fuel fill-ups is over 500 miles.  The Futura is just over 200 miles.

The second this is that my car gets between 26 & 27 mpg and that’s not too bad.  My previous SUV got about 19 mpg and that was annoying me with a 72 mile round trip.  That motivated me to fire up the bike again and save some petro $$$.  At 27 mpg, the cost savings doesn’t necessarily outweigh the comforts in the off-seasons: summer - way too friggin’ hot in the afternoon, winter - way too cold in the morning.

Finally, no matter how hard I try, those extra five minutes to get suited up and warm up the bike, just can’t be found.  I’m tired and I wear (usually) business casual…bug juice on business casual clothes sucks.  Heh - bug juice doesn’t come outta khaki’s that easy!  Another five minutes when I arrive, another when I leave, then another when I get home.  Twenty minutes adds up to a lot of my time.

My schedule is such that I work out on Monday and Friday, and stay late on Wednesday.  That leaves Tuesday and Thursday.

I think I’m going to stick to the spontaneous ride in for pleasure.  Although $4/gallon could make me rethink that…again.

I used to commute on a motorcycle during my college days, going to school and work. I had no other vehicle. When you ride a motorcycle because you HAVE to ride a motorcycle, it takes all the fun away. You start to hate the motorcycle. That’s happened to just about every biker I know.

Relax, you’re normal.

Looking for that 20 minutes. Let me ask, how long does it take you to get to work and back in your car? Now how long on the Aprilia?

Bob,

Been there, done that myself. I used to commute by bike every day from Tempe to 115th Ave. Someplace along the way the fun or occasional challenge of it wore off so I’ve been a car commuter for maybe 10 years now.

I ride the bike to work a couple of times a month when the weather is nice, sometimes more often. Other than that I’d rather put the miles on the car and save the wear and tear on the bike for fun miles. I have to confess though I’ve pondered some sort of big scooter that I could use and abuse getting to and from work just for the 75-80 mpg.

I love commuting to work, despite the hassle.

The benefits:

Less fuel use (2X).
Better attiude upon arrival.
Keeping my skills sharp.
Keeping the bike’s battery charge, oil in the valve train and carburators “wet”.
Not wasting a whole year insurance premium.

The detriments:

Additional exposure in an alreayd higher risk activity.
Weather concerns.
Many more miles and wear and tear on the machine (more replacement or tires, chains and oil …. expensive!)
Not much storage space if I stop at the store on the way home.

A wash:

Time (any time saved by increased mobility is offset by prep time).

Priceless:

The envy in the eyes of cagers on a beautiful day!

I’ve been enjoying the commute to work on my bike when I get called in. The coldest I’ve had to deal with was 34 degrees F. for a 30 minute commute. I knew that later in the day it was warming up. I just recently bought a summer mesh jacket for the hot weather, which I suspect is no where near as hot as in your area. I’m not a morning person, so I can totally understand, and been there, not having the time to get the bike out, suit up and go. What about those gas prices!?! Yikes.
