Product Review - Receka Underleathers

I’m not going to spend a lot of time on this review because of current circumstances.  I just checked their website to steal some pictures and nothing really exists beyond a blank home page and an empty online store.  I have no idea if these guys are even in business any more, especially since I got my suits about five years ago…before the advent of UnderArmor.

Anyway, this garment serves as a full body suit made of stretch lycra and a mesh material around the chest for ventilation.  It has two main functions.  The first and most important is to wick away moisture.  The second is to provide a slippery surface so that the rider can get in and out

My Day In Court

I arrived at the Courthouse about 45 minutes before my scheduled docket time of 9:30. I wanted to get a sense of the process before my case came up. I made it past the metal detector on the second try; I had to return my Official Cub Scout pocketknife to the saddlebag of the bike. Having been rendered harmless I entered Courtroom 2 where a dozen or so alledged scofflaws waited their turn for justice. I was unprepared for what I saw and heard.

Traffic court is hilarious. This is the human comedy in all its absurd glory. People of all stations, most having been exposed to too many episodes of The People’s Court, are lined up to have their

Product Review - Creative Zen Vision:M 30 GB MP3 and Video Player

This is the second attempt at finding an PMP that is not an iPod that is also less than $200.  I previously purchased a Toshiba Gigabeat and things didn’t go so well.  My goals are not so common in that all I really care about is big buttons to navigate with motorcycle gloves and about 12 hours of battery life.  I went with this PMP after reading what were mostly positive reviews (that I somehow missed before) and…well…price.  Again, I bought this from buydig.com for $150 ($200 - $50 rebate).  And again, within about three days, the device was in my hands.

A blurb from the manufacturer’s description:
The Vision:M is Creative’s newest creation poised with an impressive set of features. The most notable

Rolling Thunder’s 20th Anniversary Ride To Washington

Yesterday marks the 20th Anniversary of Rolling Thunder’s Ride to Washington.  Since I just heard about this on the radio this morning, I will not pretend to be in the know.  From a contributor at Associated Content:
Every year on Memorial Day weekend hundreds of thousands of motorcycles roll into Washington D.C. This year will be no different, and if you are in the area- this spectacle is something you won’t want to miss.

The Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Rally will start on May 25th, 2007 and end on May 28th, 2007. The parking spots on the street are blocked off and reserved for motorcycles only, the street is also blocked off during the ride. The ride started in 1987 as the

Product Review - Toshiba MES30VW Gigabeat 30 GB Portable Media Player

Ever since I piped music in my helmet for the first time, I knew I had to have it.  Adding tunes to a motorcycle commute transformed the ride from decent to downright enjoyable.  And since my ride in is no less than forty minutes each way, it matters.  I am writing this review with the perspective of a motorcycle rider.  I am not an electronics geek and do not know every little function / feature this unit has.  My mission - does this PMP work well on a motorcycle while wearing motorcycle gloves.

NOTE:  To answer the obvious questions as to why not an iPod?  I don’t know.  I have this thing.  I don’t like Apple.  And since I ride an

Motorcycle Vibration Can Damage Hearing?

Read that carefully.  While all noises are actually vibrations, this theory is specifically the motorcycle vibration from riding and having your head inside a helmet.  An article posted at Faster and Faster cites an article from Bike Magazine, where Dr. Carley is suggesting that the motorcycle vibration alone aids in the hearing loss.

From the author who has read the Bike Magazine articel and paraphrased it:
But what’s more, the article goes on to explain that even using earplugs may not necessarily save our hearing. It says, ‘Earplugs give some protection, but a lot of what you’re hearing isn’t arriving via your ear canal. It’s being transmitted through your skull. Essentially, a helmet is a very noisy device attached to your

MotoGP and Rain

This past weekend demonstrated that it takes a team effort to win races.  Rossi is clearly the best rider, yet only managed to finish sixth.  Hayden is struggling this year, and he was doing well in the wet…well…until he wadded it up.  And finally, what’s up with the Frenchmen and Vermeulen?  Nice work fellas!

This race was all about strategy, not speed.  If I remember correctly, Vermeulen came in a lap before the current leaders.  It paid off.  Edwards came in about three laps before the current leaders.  Obviously, that did not pay off.

Don’t get me wrong…the lack of speed made it a little dull at times, but the in-turn antics made up for it.  For me, it was pretty fun

Speed Kills! …. well, not really!

One of the most oft repeated cliches of modern times is “Speed Kills”. For the last several decades, it’s been constantly used by several well meaning but misguided groups trying to promote safe driving. I believe the original use of the term was popularized in the ’70s to warn people of the danger of methamphetamine. But, now it has come to be construed that anyone who violates the posted speed limit is a homicidal maniac. The problem with this inaccurate and over used the phrase, is it has become part of our collective unconsciousness and its meaning is taken as fact without question. I really hate this kind of mass brainwashing as it keeps people from asking hard questions;

Snell Memorial Foundation - A Change in Direction

Damn.  I don’t really like being wrong, but when I am I fess up to it.  Do you remember the big hub-bub between the folks at Snell and the folks at Motorcyclist Magazine (MM) - Blowing the Lid Off.  We had a couple articles on the topic as well here and here.   It appears that the 2010 Snell Helmet Standard will have some big changes coming…like those suggested by Motorcyclist Magazine.

I was fairly hard on the magazine guys for a couple of reasons.  First, I thought it was more about Snell versus Motorcyclist than about helmet standards - create a shit-storm to sell magazines.  In hindsight, who really knows.

Second, is my general distrust for journalists.  For the most

The Beast Report – CCS/SW Round #5 – May 12th & 13th.

The heat got turned up at the 5th round of the CCS/SW racing series at firebird east race way. Air temps reached 105 degrees for both days, with track temperatures being reported at over 158. To say the racing action was white hot was to be understated.

Team GothicBeast racing was flying the white flag and hiding in a rented air conditioned trailer. The Beast was kept company by Alan Chook and the Sirius racing team of Aron Weiss #19, and everyone focused on making it though the weekend in as best comfort as possible.

With the white hot temps came some serious lap times from all the racers. The Beast continued improving lap times though
