2007 MotoGP Laguna Seca - Yawn

I consider myself a huge fan of MotoGP and think its the greatest racing on TV and in general. There are a couple things I need to be entertained though. A - good racing & B - my guy(s) to be involved in the action. Unfortunately, for me, this race gave me neither after turn #1.
There is a big “?” about defending the Laguna Seca three-peat. Don’t get me wrong, Stoner had a perfect, and mistake free race. But the reality is that the question about Hayden’s performance on his home turf will go unnswered until next year. Could he have beaten Dtoner today? It appears that a Hayden three-peat would have been difficult.
Rivalries and the home crowd, however, bring out the best in natives and I personally think that Hayden had it i him. We wil never know.
Oh yeah, the other guy I had high hopes for was John Hopkins. Ugh.
I watched the incident a couple times and really there is no clear fault. Hayden overcooked the turn (which I could see happen about two seconds before it occurred), and Hopkins made what I judge to be a risky pass. Such is racing. It’s almost as disappointing to the US racer fan as it was to Repsol last year when Pedrosa took out Hayden..almost.
I had a last second chance to go to the races live. I would have had to pull a lot of strings, spend a lot of cash, and take some vacation. Given how the race unfolded, I am glad I took a pass. I am sure it would have been fun, but without Hayden and Hopkins on the track, something seemed missing.

I agree, AB. The race lacked much drama or close dicing, at least from what the TV coverage showed. Rossi doesn’t seem to like Laguna Seca so he didn’t add much to the fun. The other disappointment was DuHamel’s performance. I was really pulling for him (us old guys have to stick together) to do what Roger Hayden wound up doing, but Miguel pulling off and saying his head wasn’t in it? Didn’t seem like him to do that.
The bright spot on the day was Roger Hayden’s performance and it’s not hard to imagine him getting another opportunity to ride MotoGP. Finishing 10th on a bike with which he had very little practice was a pretty amazing ride.
