Making Motorcycles a Family Sport

One of the things I have struggled with is how to make motorcycling a family sport.  My wife likes to ride on the back of my street bike every now and then, but hasn’t in the past six years - ever since she found out she was pregnant with our first daughter.  Back then I had a Valkyrie, and ever since the bikes have been more sport oriented and not so-comfy looking for the passenger.  I now have two daughters, three & five, and as they get older I want to introduce them to the sport.

This weekend my wife went skiing in Denver with her family and I was solo with the kids.  It just so happened that a bunch of folks from work were camping this weekend in the desert about 45 minutes from my house.  I decided to pack up the SUV and head for the sand.

I brought my dirt bike just in case there was some good riding (there wasn’t), but more or less relied on the ‘camp’ quads for entertainment with my daughters.  As it turned out, there were plenty of volunteers to take them around the area on the quads.  They had a ball.  When I took my oldest one out with me, all I heard was “go faster! go faster!” (sniff, sniff).

They are not quite ready for their own equipment, but the five year old is getting there.  The problem is that my wife doesn’t really have an interest in the Great Outdoors beyond hiking and skiing.  I don’t mind if it becomes a sport for my daughters and I, but I am trying to figure out a way to spark her interest.

I’m not a rich guy, but I could easily find a way to afford quads for the family so its not a hardware issue.

As a knuckle-draggin’ neanderthal, this is where I will seek the wisdom of others in my quest.  I would be interested in the success stories as well as the not-so-successful stories to help me.  Any input would be appreciated.

My suggestion would be to get her to take the MSF course using the argument that she needs to know the basics in case you are out riding as a family and something happens to you and she needs to ride the bike. Once she takes the course, then she may love it and no more problems. If she doesn’t then just enjoy the time with the kids and make time for her other outdoor activities as a family.

AB,

What you need for the Mrs. is one of the 2-place quads like that Arctic Cat 650 TRV or Can-am Outlander Max 800, that way the wife can ride along behind as on the bike and the kids can do their own thing on kid-sized quads. In fact, that’s what I did, spent $8k on a two-up quad for me and the Mrs and she…oh wait..doesn’t like it. Wanna buy a 2-place quad at a good price?

So far the only thing my wife’s found acceptable is the backseat of the Gold Wing. As for getting the rug rats started riding, I started my son at 10 and I think that was a little too late, for some reason it just didn’t “take” for him. He likes cars instead. Ugh…

My recommendation is to continue doing what you stumbled upon: group get-togethers in fun settings. The club I’m a member of, the Fraser Valley Dirt Riders Association (www.FVDRA.com), has understood this and makes a point of having monthly organized weekends for the entire family. At first the draw was the pack of kids for our rugrats to play with and the socializing around the campfire, then the fun rides became attractive as our oldest started trail-riding on his 50. My wife started asking me if she could borrow my bike to take junior out for a spin. As our 3 kids get older, we’ll not only have to implement a hand-me-down policy for the kids’ equipment, but invest in a permanent solution to the wife’s riding needs!

My kids started on a mini bike at 8 and 6. Then proceeded to dirt bikes and quads. I looked at it as training for when they hit the street bikes. The older one is 21 now and into sportbikes. Just had his GSXR stolen last week from Camp LeJeune :(
The first wife loves motorcycles, current wife not so much. She went on the dirt bike outings, but was more happy watching than riding her 4 wheeler. She rides on the back of my street bike, but is obviously paranoid.
I agree with NerdFrog, make it as much family thing as possible!
