Road Closed

We decided to run up to our local Super Target to get some stuff this afternoon. The exit to our development was coned off to only flow one way (the wrong way) due to an accident. As I rolled up, it was a motorcycle / vehicle accident with the car empty and a biker walking around. Not a good sight.

All I saw at that vantage point was a cruiser on it side and a small car facing the other way from my sight line. I was able to u-turn and get going the correct way, but it had us pass the accident scene close up. By this point, the biker I saw was hugging his (assumed) passenger from his bike. He was on a separate bike and my guess is that it was a friend who was involved in the crash.

As I drove by the front of the car, it was not pretty. There were two separate and distinct cave-ins on the windshield of the car. My guess is that it was a t-bone of sorts with one of them pulling out in front of the other. It was also clear to me at this point that there had to be some serious injuries.

We got back tot he area an hour later and the road was still closed - that can only mean one thing. Somone died, and it probably wasn’t the driver of the car. Sad really. I have no idea who was at fault, but it really doesn’t matter to the friend and family of the likely deceased.

We were not able to enter our development the same way and were diverted. About ten minutes later, after snaking our way to the other entrance to our sub, we saw the ‘witness’ biker couple riding by us. They were wearing jeans, t-shirts, and a leather vest. That’s all.

It would be inappropriate at this point to pile on about proper gear or ATGATT, so I’ll go at it another way. It served as a reminder to me as to the importance of proper motorcycle protective gear no matter the terrain. Some people look at me like I have two heads when I suit of to ride off-road with all the armor, etc. So be it. I’m just trying to boost my odds if something bad happens.

Bob,

AZCentral.com has information on this fatal accident that you describe.

A 57-year-old motorcyclist died after a collision with a passenger car that closed down a Peoria road for three hours and caused traffic delays.

The fatal crash happened at Lake Pleasant Road and Westwing Parkway, said Mike Tellef, the Peoria police and fire spokesman.

Tellef said a car operated by a 17-year-old Glendale girl stopped at a stop sign westbound on Westwing Parkway, preparing to make a left turn.

She said there were several vehicles making right turns from Lake Pleasant Road onto Westwing Parkway when she pulled out to make the left and was struck by a motorcycle going north on Lake Pleasant Road, Tellef said.

The victim was transported to a hospital trauma center, where he was pronounced dead. The girl had only minor injuries and was taken for treatment by her mother.

The motorcyclist’s name was not immediately available, but Tellef confirmed that the rider is a Peoria resident.

Lake Pleasant Road was closed south on Jomax and Carefree Highway, causing traffic delays.

The collision is under investigation, and no citations have been written.

It seems the girl you witnessed was the driver of the car.

A couple of comments:

From the description, how can they get away with “no citations issued”? The girl was at a stop sign, you don’t go until it’s CLEAR. Obviously, since cars were turning right, she ASS-U-ME-ed everyone would turn right (why surely none of the vehicles would want to go straight!!!)

I get tickets when I visit AZ from cops who didn’t even see the alleged violation, but with what I’m sure was multiple witnesses and “no citation issued”, what kinda crap it that!!!

This morning while riding to work on my bicycle (saves even more gas money than riding a motorcycle) a car pulled out from a stop sign right in front of me (from my right). If it wasn’t for my motorcycle skills and anticipation, I wouldn’t have predicted the driver looking the other way wouldn’t bother checking her left again. I was pretty sure she wouldn’t, so I covered my brakes. I got within 10 feet of T-boning her door and most likely a ride to the hospital. Did anyone get a citation? Of course not, the cops are never around when this kinda shit goes on.

Be careful out there people, everyone is trying to KILL you. Dress for the best outcome (yes, I had a bicycle helmet on, but now I’m considering a motocross helmet), get training, keep an eye on EVERYONE and don’t assume anyone knows what the hell they are doing out there.
