I Think I’m Old

I commuted with a couple younger guys from work today because we all made a dealership run for our lease vehicles. It was rather funny to listen to these twenty-something ‘kids’ talk about street bikes. It was if I had stepped back in time to my first couple of years riding.
Everything they talked about was “fast this” and “speed that” and “wheelie there”. It was quite funny and for the most part, all I did was sit back and listen. I listened to cop chase stories, I listened to having a ‘moment’ stories, and of course I listened to the bench racing.
Top speed was a topic of discussion, as if it directly correlated to penis size. “I got my bike to the top speed the first day I bought it”. I didn’t have the heart to say that flat line, top speed stuff is boring unless its on a drag bike at the quarter mile.
What I enjoyed the most was saying to myself “I had that bike…had that one too…had that one but not the same year” - you get the point. Bottom line is that I realized I’ve been riding a long time and I’ve owned a lot of bikes.
When I brought up the off-road end of the sport, they immediately thought of motocross. I explained that I thought I really wanted to only ride the fast trails, but in fact have developed a favorite in tight technical trails. The response was “I could only do motocross with huge jumps and stuff”. Heh.
But as usual, the conversation ended with the universal tire kicker statement: “If I got a motorcycle I’d kill myself knowing how fast I would ride it.” No comment from me was needed.
