Fall Foliage Tour - Central Utah

This is my absolute favorite time of year to ride! The air is crisp, the roads are less crowded and the colors in the trees are unbelievable. I spent a long weekend riding in my favorite part of Utah. For those of you who live in a temperate climate that doesn’t produce the best of the 4 seasons, Autumn, you have my sympathy. There’s nothing quite like a spirited street ride through a gauntlet of red, green and gold on a ribbon of convoluted asphalt.

Some poignent moments from the tour:

Creating a wake of blowing aspen leaves

Colors in the trees so vivid that it makes it hard to watch the road

Can you say YELLOW!

Can you say YELLOW!

Lightning, thunder and dodging a quickie thunderstorm on top of a mountain

Wild Weather on the Mountain Top

Connecting a set of perfect twisties on a deserted road

Get 'er leant reet o'er

And sharing it with your favorite riding buddy

Taking a GSXR 750 all the way to 14,000 RPMs for a couple gears

A red pickup truck with camper that we could barely shake, even in the tight stuff

Pavement that is so grippy, nary a twitch makes it’s way to the faithful butt-o-meter

Sensory Saturation

Sensory Saturation

Passing 37 cars in a 5 mile stretch because Mr. Winnebago just can’t bring himself to pull over, despite driving well under the posted speed limit

Burger and fries at a “Mom and Pop” in a town so small they set-up a dummy in a cop car to slow down the tourists

BMW riders whining about the lack of comfort, complexity and cost of their mounts

Chilly mornings and warm afternoons that reminds your senses, temperature variation is invigorating

Some LESS than stellar moments from the tour:

Way too many cows and their pies from the cowboys bringing their doggies down the mountain for Winter

Rain and wet roads just as your favorite turns arrive, then getting passed by a guy wearing 20 year old leathers and a bike not much younger

Tar strips on your favorite road

Weather that limits your road selection

Rocks kicked up by your partner that chips your $75 Arai mirrored sheild

Just enough deer, despite hunting season, that keep you guessing around every turn

Wet leaves on the road

Sightseeing car and RV drivers that don’t feel the need to let you know when they are going to suddenly stop/pull-off/pull-on/u-turn

The last of the season bugs still manage to impale themselves on your bike and facesheild

Other friends who couldn’t make it

The yin/yang of this kind of trip just makes the highs seem that much higher!

What are seasons? We have the sunny season and the temp changes a little, but thats it.

Nice shots. I rode in the Michigan fall seasons when I lived there. Not for sport as MI roads such and the terrain is flat. But it was cool nonetheless.

That looks like a great ride. Mind mentioning what roads you took? I am in the area, but without a bike (this year) it will have to wait for next fall, but this looks like one trip I have to try out.

Sorry CS but I don’t give away my favorite roads, I like the current traffic density just the way it is. In fact, I’m really pissed at how readily the moto-mags give out such hard won information. AngryBob and I both have first hand knowledge of how a great road can become an obstacle course, it’s called “the Dragon”.

I gave enough information in the blog for you to sleuth it out with a little map study and some backroad exploration. That’s what riding’s all about anyway, finding your own favorites.
