Found a Long Lost Tool

Since I have recently mastered the art of changing tires manually, I have a whole collection of extra valve stem caps and cores. This experience, of course, is due to my penchant for pinch flats on the dirt bike. I am hoping that $200 later and front + rear Tubliss systems that will be something of the past.

Probably five years ago, I made a valve core tool by using a metal valve stem cap with the slotted end and a YZF750 connecting rod bolt. The threads were not the same pitch and by forcing them together…well…its a permanent tool.

I have looked for that damn tool for a couple years now and probably two dedicated searches of the toolbox, etc. I have been using Kenda inner tubes which come with a plastic cap with the slotted end. It works, but the prongs will easily snap off.

Well, this past weekend I ran over a nail in the cage. I noticed that the RF tire was low and needed a plug. The only tire repair kit that I have is my motorcycle on that I carry in my fanny pack while riding. Mind you I have been in and out of this pack a lot as I have patched a couple tubes when I’ve been in a pinch (pun intended). This time, for whatever reason, my home made valve core tool showed itself as I was rummaging through the tire repair kit bag in search of a plug.

See, I DID put it in a really good place. I just never (ever) thought of lookig there. DOH!. Now I know - check the really good places first. :)
