Omnibus Public Lands Bill to be Voted on Monday, March 16!

See… this is a play in words. This exact Bill was defeated this week in the House falling TWO votes short of the two-thirds needed. Good news right? Nope. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid stuffed the exact same Bill in the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Battlefield Acquisition Grant Program as an ammendment - a friggin’ 1300 page ammendment. I’m guessing as many politicians will read it as did the Stimulus Bill from Pelosi/Obama - ZERO.
Idiots.
This is what happens when feel good democrats are in charge. All of us off-roaders: 2-wheel, 3-wheel, quad, jeepers, and sand rails need to come together and send an overwhelming message to our U.S. Senators and our Senate Leadership. The House defeated the Bill yet now through some obscure rules, the Senate leader is packaging it in another Bill to be voted on this Monday.
From the AMA:
The American Motorcyclist Association urges everyone to contact their Senators to vote “No” on H.R. 146, the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Battlefield Acquisition Grant Program. This bill was formerly known as S. 22, the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, which would prohibit all motorized vehicle access including motorcycles and ATVs on over 2 million acres of public lands. As you may know, S. 22 was defeated just days ago on March 11 in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Now, following defeat of the bill, the U.S. Senate leadership is expected to employ a little used parliamentary procedure that allows them to overcome the outcome of the House vote on S. 22.The U.S. House of Representatives preserved your access to vital public lands when S. 22 fell two votes short of the two-thirds majority needed to pass on March 11th. The successful defeat of the bill was only accomplished after thousands of concerned individuals, like you, contacted their Representatives to tell them to oppose the legislation. However, the Senate Leadership wants to try and un-do that success by bringing the bill back as a 1,300 page amendment to an unrelated bill for a vote as early as Monday.
With such a short time frame for action, the best way to tell your Senators to vote “No” on H.R. 146 is to call.If you would prefer to contact your Senators with e-mail, you may contact your Senators by clicking here. We have pre-written a letter for your use.
Immediate action is critical to help keep 2.1 million acres of public land open to motorized recreation. Please call your Senators and tell everyone you can to do the same.
Next week, every Senator must know to vote “No” on H.R. 146!
We get what we elect. I’m not a big AMA guy, but they are spot-on with this one. I filled out the form letter in the link above and it took about one minute. Just do it.
Funny - the going bankrupt New York Times still blames the Republican minority party for its defeat:
For now, the mega-public lands bill that would have greatly expanded public wilderness areas, parks and miles and miles of public trails, is stalled. House Republicans managed to maintain enough opposition to the omnibus measure to defeat it earlier today in a vote requiring two-thirds of the House members…
Odd. Much mention of those evil right wingers stopping public parks and trails, but ABSOLUTELY NO MENTION OF THE 2 MILLION ACRES BANNED FOR OHV USE. Not surprised.
I have had the ability to be passive in my voting life to date. There were no radicals from either side in power. That has changed with the liberals (not center-left dems) owning the House Senate and White House. I imagine that this blog will be used to shine the light on public land access and other lesislative stupidity because its not going to stop.
Think I’m kidding? Check out CPSIA if you really want to be pissed off as an off-roader.
