Are you a Motorcycle Addict?

I was reading the latest issue (April 2009) of Motorcycle Consumer News and came across an interesting observation by apologist Fred Rau. He noted the 10 questions most commonly asked by addiction assistance groups to determine whether your addiction is real or imagined. (Why is it always 10 questions?)

1)       Do you lose time from work due to your addiction?

2)       Is your addiction making your home life unhappy?

3)       Is your addiction affecting your reputation?

4)       Have you ever felt remorse related to your addiction?

5)       Do you crave what you are addicted to at certain times of the day?

6)       Do you want to want to do it again the very next day?

7)   Do you want to indulge your addiction alone?

8)   Have you ever had a complete loss of memory as a result of your addiction?

9)   Is your addiction jeopardizing your employment?

10)  Have you ever been hospitalized or institutionalized as a result of your addiction?

My answers:

1-No, 2-No, 3-Yes, 4-Maybe, 5-No, 6-No, 7-Yes, 8-Maybe, 9-No, 10-Yes

Even though I know I’m an addict, I can only claim to answer 4 of the questions with an unqualified “Yes”. Of course the fact that I’m an addict has altered my lifestyle to the point where a couple of the questions don’t really apply as a result of my addiction (my home life doesn’t include other people, so it’s virtually imposible to make anyone else unhappy).

Here’s how I know I’m an addict. As I write this, I’m on my way back from a week long business trip and all I can think about is riding one of my bikes. The fact I’m blogging about it on the flght, is also a bit of an indicator.

I don’t need to answer 10 questions to know! I guess I’m what my friend John refers to as a “functioning addict”.
